    Job Summary

    This seasonal, full-time position is part of an Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) roving crew based out of the Iron Range OHV State Recreation Area near Gilbert, Minnesota. Work schedule: Mondays through Thursdays, 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM. In summer season the crew departs Gilbert early Monday and returns Thursday afternoon. Anticipated season: May through November each year.

     

    This position performs semi-skilled labor work and/or is responsible for operating and servicing medium and heavy motorized equipment. The incumbent will also assist skilled craft employees in the construction, maintenance, and repair of Parks & Trails Facilities in Region 2, including the Iron Range Off Highway Vehicle State Recreation Area facility.

     

    This position works for the DNR Parks and Trails Division and gets to travel throughout the northeast region and occasionally throughout other areas of the state while working on various types of Off Highway Vehicle trails. The incumbent will be operating ATVs, along with many types of trail construction equipment.

     

    + **EQUIPMENT INSPECTION, OPERATION and MAINTENANCE** : Acquire/maintain proper certifications, licensing, and training to operate/maintain heavy equipment. Drive light trucks; operate tractors with trailers to transport equipment/supplies; operate mowers, ATVs, implements and attachments, dump truck, loader, grader, skid steer, backhoe, watercraft, grooming equipment, etc. Wash/clean vehicles. Operate power equipment/tools, i.e., chainsaws, brush cutters, woodchippers, winches, generators, saws, drills, impact wrenches, grinders, power washers) and hand tools. Inspect/maintain equipment/tools. Ensure safety at all times. Train other operators.

    + **ROUTINE MAINTENANCE ACTIVITIES:** Service facilities, i.e., inspect/repair bridges, trails; groom trails; mow, prune, remove trash and graffiti, sweep, grade, plow trail treadways and parking lots. Service buildings: clean, make structural repairs, i.e., windows, fixtures (plumbing & electrical), walls, ceilings, floors, woodwork, etc. Install, repair/replace signs, notices, fences, channel markers, buoy systems. Identify, remove hazard trees, including in rivers. Apply pesticides/herbicides. Plant trees, shrubs/forbs/grasses. Install/service/repair HVAC equipment and water treatment systems and pumps. Repair masonry and asphalt.

    + **DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES** : Rehabilitate structures/systems. Determine/order materials and equipment for projects. Construct OHV trails, boat ramps, ski, snowmobile, hike & horse trails, parking lots, access roads, rest areas, etc. Assemble, install/adjust/repair floating and roll-in docks, piers & platforms, tables, fences, etc. Apply technical knowledge to stake jobs, apply information from topography maps/engineering plans, etc. Ensure safety at all times.

    + **ADMINISTRATION:** Collect, record and report on equipment and work performed, i.e., vehicle logs, time sheets, daily activity reports, and injury reports; vehicle inspections, equipment repairs, site, and facility inspections; pesticide use; report suspected encroachments. Identify/document/report rehab and construction needs.

    + **PUBLIC RELATIONS:** Represent the DNR in a positive way. Respond on site to public inquiries. Distribute information/maps. Survey facility users.

    Minimum Qualifications

    + Position requires current possession of a valid Class A license, passing a pre-employment drug screen and participation in the ongoing DNR random screening program. Otherwise qualified applicants who do not have a valid Class A will be allowed up to six (6) months to acquire one, as a condition of employment.

    + Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in trades work and construction.

    + Ability to safely operate and maintain medium & heavy motorized equipment, e.g., dump trucks, snowplows, snow groomers, tractors with trailers, watercraft, grader, backhoe, front-end loader, auger, plus power and hand tools, including chain saws, air compressors, carpentry tools, and other equipment/tools as assigned.

    + Ability to service, perform minor repairs and make adjustments to machinery and equipment, including general maintenance and repair of buildings.

    + Ability to perform semi-skilled trades work sufficient to assist or perform carpentry, plumbing, electrical assignments, including installation and maintenance of equipment, plumbing, heating, and electrical systems.

    + Ability to understand and follow directions sufficient to interpret, communicate and carry out assignments safely and efficiently.

    + Strength and agility sufficient to load, operate and repair equipment and materials.

    + Endurance sufficient to perform tasks under extreme environmental conditions such as heat, cold, rain, snow, sun and wind.

    + Ability to work with limited supervision.

    + Ability to communicate with staff/visitors, etc.

    + Ability to solve problems, make decisions, work safely and effectively with others.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Current possession of a valid Class A license

    + Two (2) years of experience in heavy and medium equipment operation and maintenance, site design and construction, and/or landscape/vegetation management or related skilled trades.

    + Knowledge of field management techniques, including engineering skills needed to maintain trail and water recreation facilities.

    + Knowledge of general construction methods.

    + Working knowledge of equipment, machinery and materials needed to develop, operate, and maintain trail and water recreation facilities.

    + One (1) year of experience in equipment maintenance and minor equipment repairs.

    + Experience in the safe operation of tractors, trucks, trailers, mowers, chain saws and related equipment, or trails and water recreation site maintenance.

    + Working knowledge of civil engineering, landscape architecture and planning process, as applicable to recreation facility design and construction.

    + Considerable knowledge of equipment needed to develop, operate, and maintain trail and water recreation facilities.

    + Working knowledge of natural resource management fields such as forestry, wildlife management, hydrology, sufficient to know when a specialist should be involved.

    + Technical school certificates, licensure, or degrees in one or more of the following: carpentry, construction, electrical repair, plumbing, masonry, small engine repair/automotive, or HVAC.

    + First aid/CPR certification.

    + Experience providing lead work direction/assigning tasks/ensuring completion.

    Additional Requirements

    This position requires current possession of a valid Class A license or the ability to obtain one in the first 6 months of employment. The selected applicant will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screen and will be included in the ongoing DNR random drug and alcohol test program.
