Purpose:
Under the general supervision of the Medical and Administrative Directors of Pulmonary Services the Pulmonary Technologist II is responsible for all aspects of the technical, analytical and the instruction of all high-risk procedures in the pulmonary evaluation process regarding patient testing.
Responsibilities:
+ Maintains and calibrates diagnostic equipment. Applies basic troubleshooting skills and makes minor adjustments to the equipment when necessary.
+ Assists in providing emergency medical care.
+ Performs cardio pulmonary stress testing, including the insertion and maintenance of arterial lines. May also administer medications for patient prep for cardio pulmonary exercise testing
+ Performs exercise desaturation and home oxygen evaluations. Also obtains arterial blood gas and hemoglobin samples.
+ Performs duties and responsibilities according to the corporate philosophy and basis of service excellence of the UPMC Health System.
+ Assists with department orientation and teaching staff and or students. Also assists with research activities.
+ Performs pulmonary diagnostic testing including spirometry, lung volumes and diffusing capacity. Administers respiratory care medications as they relate to performance of pulmonary function testing as delineated in policies /protocols.
+ Assists the Department Supervisor with monitoring and improving the Department Quality Assurance Program including the evaluation of new testing equipment and or techniques.
+ Responsible for comprehensive bronchoprovacation challenge testing procedures.
Must be credentialed by the NBRC as a Certified or Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist, or certified as an Exercise Specialist or Exercise Physiologist by the American College of Sports Medicine, or credentialed by the NBRC as a Respiratory Care Practioner with one year experience in pulmonary diagnostic testing; or equivalent with a demonstrated proficiency in all procedures offered by the Department. Must obtain CPFT credential within 2 years of hire. BLS certification required. ACLS certification must be obtained within one year. Must be able to interact with unstable patients and operate complex medical electronic equipment.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
+ Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) OR Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
