    The University of Maine Police Department is seeking applications for two Campus Safety Officer positions. These two full-time positions report to the University of Maine Police Department (UMPD) while being remotely assigned to the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) campuses located in Augusta, Maine and Bangor, Maine. These positions perform routine and emergency response responsibilities related to the safety and security of the University campuses and the community by monitoring buildings, grounds, and parking facilities. Starting salary is between $20.82 - $22.53 per hour.

     

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

     

    + Engages and participates in community policing/problem-oriented policing programs to improve the safety culture on campus.

    + Monitors University grounds and facilities via foot, bicycle and vehicle patrol for safety and security violations; warns or cites violators as necessary; responds to routine and complex emergency situations; responds to radio or telephone dispatches; assists in emergency procedures such as restraining unruly persons or aiding in the evacuation of buildings; contacts appropriate police, fire and medical assistance. May detain suspected offenders until the arrival of law enforcement.

    + Controls vehicle and pedestrian traffic to assure smooth flow of traffic, which includes directing traffic and issuing citations for parking violations.

    + Communicates with the general public and employees while patrolling University property; assists individuals with disabled vehicles and vehicle lockouts; checks building security; and observes behavior of citizens.

    Qualifications:

    Required:

    Classification knowledge requirements:

    + Customer service principles;

    + UMS buildings, parking lots, and other property;

    + Applicable laws, rules, and regulations;

    + Safety and security policies and procedures;

    + Accident, incident, and parking violation report forms.

    + Regional geography;

    + Applicable radio and telecommunications equipment and systems;

    + Computers and related software applications.

    Classification skill requirements:

    + Providing exemplary customer service;

    + Performing security and safety activities;

    + Thinking and acting quickly in an emergency with judgment and discretion;

    + Remaining calm during stressful situations;

    + Filling out work orders and other paperwork accurately and completely;

    + Working independently;

    + Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to (give and) receive work direction.
