Job Description
Assistant Director, Global Field Education
Full-Time Equivalent Hiring Range: $72,450 to $90,550; salary commensurate with relevant experience.
Reporting to the Assistant Professor of Global Practice, the Assistant Director, Global Field Education is responsible for oversight and coordination of international field placements for 20-25 MSW students in the Global Practice field-of-practice. In addition to enhancing the faculty’s efforts in regard to international program matters, the Assistant Director is responsible for program planning, curriculum development, recruitment, field placement, and advising. Working closely with the Assistant Dean of Field Education, the Assistant Director is responsible for oversight and coordination for domestic field placements for 45-50 MSW students.
Essential Functions:
PROGRAM PLANNING (30%):
* Designs and regularly evaluates international field education opportunities (credits, length of stay, supervision, language, cultural awareness, personal safety, etc.) in collaboration with the Office of Field Education and the Assistant Professor of Global Practice.
* Oversees the international field placement process by: holding informational seminars, accepting and processing applications, interviewing, selecting, approving the international field placement.
* Creates and revises promotional materials and required forms for the international agencies.
* Drafts and updates pre-departure seminar for the Global Practice Students.
* Maintains emergency protocol systems during the faculty led international trips and international field placements, in coordination with the Associate Dean of Student Experience, by: updating and communicating the policies and procedures, ensuring SSW emergency coverage, coordinating with other international programs on campus around safety protocols.
* Devises supporting materials to ensure legal and medical compliance for the international field placement and faculty led trips.
* Regularly evaluates the program’s design and outcomes, makes adjustments as needed.
* Enhances and develops international student exchange programs (courses, credits, fees, housing, joint service projects, etc.).
* Writes an annual report on the international program as part of the School's Annual Report.
DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL PLACEMENT (25%):
* Recruits agencies for placements: identifies potential agencies; maintains contact with agencies; completes site visits; completes agency evaluation paperwork; inputs new agencies into Placement Data File; Support and monitor agencies.
* Collects and files advisor reports and placement meeting reports.
* Participates in Placement Management Meetings.
* Assists the field team in the placement of students: participates in Placement Forum (orientation meeting) for Clinical Students; reviews student applications; interviews assigned students; writes up Placement Interview Summary; participates in weekly Placement Meetings; communicates with agencies to set up student interviews; follows up on student/agency interviews to confirm placement; submits appropriate paperwork to establish placement assignment.
* Works with Director of Marketing &Communications on how to best promote our international program offerings.
* Organizes welcome/orientation session(s) for incoming international and part-time students.
* Creates and reviews informational materials about the Global Practice field-of-practice.
* Meets with students interested in the Global Practice field-of-practice.
* Nurtures and enhances relationships with representatives of international agencies and other international partners.
* Updates international field education manual with all supporting key documents in collaboration with the Assistant Professor of Global Practice and Assistant Dean of Field Education.
DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ADVISING (25%):
* Provides course and field advising to MSW students.
* Contacts students and agencies in September.
* Collects Learning Contracts in October.
* Meets with students monthly and as needed.
* Visits domestic agencies at least once each semester and additional times as needed.
* Organizes and completes site visits regularly across the globe.
* Reviews student performance each semester and submit grades.
* Attends monthly Faculty Advisor meetings.
* Participates in managing student problems as needed.
* Serves as a contact and outreach person for international students' needs in regards to local Global Practice placements and curriculum planning.
* Advises students in the Global Practice field-of-practice.
* Supervises field advisors assigned to students in global placements.
SUPPORT TO ONLINE COURSES AND MODULES RELATED TO GLOBAL PRACTICE (10%):
* Supports faculty as needed in design, revision, and rollout of online courses and training programs related to global practice.
* Works closely with the Boston College Center for Digital Innovation in Learning (CDIL) to ensure effective functioning of online modules and training offered by Global Practice faculty and carry out routine maintenance and flag complex issues to CDIL for redressal.
* Supports Boston College students and external learners to enroll into online modules offered by global practice faculty, and address/resolve problems related to accessing online modules (including in collaboration with CDIL when necessary), to ensure timely completion of coursework.
INTERNAL RESOURCE (10%):
* Searches for funding opportunities related to student scholarships, curriculum development and support, and research and evaluation.
* Increases our collaboration with and representation in international organizations relevant to global social work education and practice.
* Collaborates with other SSW units regarding international activities (MSW Admissions, Field Education, Career Services, Academic Planning Committee).
* Participates on University wide committees (if appropriate).
* Participates in the Global Practice field-of-practice meetings.
Occasional evening and weekend work required.
International travel may be required.
Requirements
Master of Social Work degree or comparable degree in a related field required. At least five years of field placements experience, three years of professional experience in program design and development, and three years international experience, with at least one year working overseas as a social worker- preferably in a low-income country. Strong organizational and communications skills. Experience in recruiting and marketing. Proficiency with MS Office suite and ability to use technology creatively for program marketing and operation. Ability to follow-through on tasks independently. Ability to function as part of a team.
