Position Description

University: Founded in 1899 as a small teaching college, Texas State University is now home to over 40,000 students. The university holds a Carnegie classification of Doctoral University-High Research Activity (R2) and is engaged in a strategic plan to attain Doctoral University-Very High Research Activity (R1) by 2027.
Texas State University is located along the beautiful San Marcos River. San Marcos is in the center of the innovation corridor, 40 minutes south of Austin and 60 minutes north of San Antonio, and is rich in vibrant and eclectic communities.
College of Education:The Department of Health and Human Performance ( HHP ) is one of three academic departments in the College of Education and is an integral component of the college’s success and future. The other academic departments in the college offer degrees in professional counseling, adult and higher education, and all aspects of PK-12 educator preparation. The college serves over 4,800 total students across all degrees from undergraduate through doctoral level and enrolls the highest number of graduate students in the university. Each department is served by the college’s pre- and post-award research office, Undergraduate Academic Advising Center, and five associate deans working in areas of faculty development and strategic planning, research and sponsored programs, student success, academic affairs and educational partnerships, and educator preparation. The HHP department chair is an active and essential member of the college’s leadership team.
Department:The Department of Health and Human Performance, with 56 instructional FTEs and 7 staff, serves approximately 2,300 students seeking undergraduate and graduate degrees in Athletic Training, Exercise and Sports Science, Public Health, and Recreation and Sport Management. HHP is among the highest enrolled departments in the university, and its Exercise and Sports Science ( ESS ) undergraduate degree is the fourth highest enrolled major in the university. Recent instructional initiatives include a proposed PhD in Kinesiology, the expansion of the ESS undergraduate degree through the TXST -Collin College Academic Alliance, and the launch of several accelerated online degrees through TXST Global.
HHP houses 10 active faculty-led research and teaching laboratories serving undergraduate and graduate students in all departmental disciplines. Faculty have recently been funded by the National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation, as well as several other external organizations and industry partners. Faculty have contributed to Texas State University’s Translational Health Research Center and the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training Center.
Required Qualifications
Required Qualifications for Appointment to the Rank of Associate Professor:
+ Earned doctorate (e.g., PhD, DrPH, EdD) in a health and human performance-related field.
+ Tenured faculty member with a current rank of advanced associate professor (with at least three years in rank by September 1, 2025).
+ Demonstrable record of scholarly, teaching, and service excellence commensurate with appointment at the rank of associate professor in the department, inclusive of a record of sustained peer-reviewed publications and research funding.
+ Experience in academic leadership such as associate or assistant department chair, department chair/school director, academic program coordination, management of large externally funded projects, and/or college or university level administration/leadership.
+ Experience leading innovative curricular initiatives focused on student success, enrollment growth, and/or career preparation for undergraduate and graduate students.
Required Qualifications for Appointment to the Rank of Professor:
+ Earned doctorate (e.g., PhD, DrPH, EdD) in a health and human performance-related field.
+ Tenured faculty member with a current rank of professor or advanced associate professor with eligibility based on department standards to be appointed professor (including at least 5 years in rank as associate professor).
+ Demonstrable record of scholarly, teaching, and service excellence commensurate with appointment at the rank of professor in the department, inclusive of a record of sustained peer-reviewed publication and research funding.
+ Experience in academic leadership such as associate or assistant department chair, department chair/school director, academic program coordination, management of large externally funded projects, and/or college or university level administration/leadership.
+ Experience leading innovative curricular initiatives focused on student success, enrollment growth, and/or career preparation for undergraduate and graduate students.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications for Appointment to the Rank of Associate Professor:
+ A sustained record of working with a large department offering degrees in disciplines such as: Athletic Training, Exercise and Sports Science, Public Health, and/or Recreation and Sport Management or similar disciplines.
+ Commitment to working collaboratively with department faculty, staff, and others throughout the university within a spirit of shared governance.
+ Experience as a contributing member of an interdisciplinary team.
+ Experience in leading and facilitating external partnerships, funding, and/or programs.
+ Experience using a variety of instructional strategies, such as face-to-face delivery, online, hybrid, experiential learning, or field-based experiences to engage students with varied needs and experiences.
+ Participation in professional organizations.
+ Experience with accreditation and/or academic program review processes.
Preferred Qualifications for Appointment to the Rank of Professor:
+ A sustained record of working with a large department offering degrees in disciplines such as: Athletic Training, Exercise and Sports Science, Public Health, and/or Recreation and Sport Management or similar disciplines.
