Diesel Technician I

The Diesel Technician I is responsible for performing skilled maintenance and repair on heavy-duty vehicles and equipment.
Transportation Services will provide uniforms as well as all tools and safety equipment. This will be an hourly paid position beginning at $23.54/hour.
The work hours for this position are Monday - Friday from 1:00pm – 10:00pm during the Fall and Spring semesters. Employees are required to work 8:00am – 5:00pm during Summer break.

Qualifications
Required Education and Experience
+ High School graduation or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
+ Three years of experience in repair and maintenance of heavy-duty vehicles or equipment or combination of vehicle maintenance and relevant workforce/school experience.
Required Licenses and Certifications
+ Must have a valid vehicle operator's license and good driving record.
+ Must be able to obtain State of Texas class "B" vehicle operator's license (Commercial driver License with passenger endorsement and air brakes endorsement) within 60 days of employment.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
+ Significant working knowledge of engine and drivetrain components.
+ Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
+ Ability to use diagnostic software to identify engine & transmission faults.
+ Basic understanding of DC electrical troubleshooting.
+ Fabrication skills including welding and operating a cutting torch.
Preferred Qualifications
+ Automotive/Diesel – Trade school.
+ Commercial vehicle operator’s license with passenger endorsement and air brakes endorsement.
+ One or more ASE certifications or equivalent OEM certifications in related specialties.
Responsibilities
+ Repair- Performs skilled tasks in the general maintenance and repair of heavy-duty vehicles and equipment including servicing, adjusting and repair of gasoline and diesel engines and all vehicle components. Replaces parts (ex. exhaust systems, batteries, belts, hoses, etc). Repairs and replaces tires.
+ Preventative Maintenance- Performs preventative maintenance inspections. Completes and updates manual and computerized service orders.
+ Administration- Ensures shop area is always kept clean and without clutter. Uses computer to obtain vehicle maintenance specifications and administer fleet wide maintenance program, including notification to appropriate leaders upon neglect or failure to maintain vehicles. Identifies replacement part numbers and submits parts requests for necessary repairs.
+ Diagnostics- Use diagnostic tools to identify vehicle issues. Troubleshoot complex problems related to engine performance, electrical systems, and more.
+ Driving- Assists by driving a DOT regulated vehicle in test driving, recovery of disabled vehicles, delivery of vehicles, etc.
The selected candidate must have the ability to climb stairs, work in hot and cold weather conditions, lift and/or move moderate to heavy weight objects, stand for extended periods of time, lift, carry, stoop, kneel, climb, push, pull, and traverse frequently. They must also be able to work Saturday home football games as needed. This position will be covered by DOT regulations and be in a random drug and alcohol testing pool.
