Job Description
MAIN FUNCTION:
Performs assigned duties under the direction of a licensed professional, surgical tech or member of the management team. The Surgical Aide plays an integral role on the OR team by ensuring that the surgical day/evening/night flows smoothly by providing assistance where appropriate. The Aide assists with the transporting of patients, performing errands, maintaining/replenishing OR supplies and stock items, sanitation of the OR rooms and routine maintenance of equipment. The Surgical Aide will work in collaboration with Central Processing Department staff to meet the department needs related to patient care. Reports to Director of Perioperative Services.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
** 1. Isolates and removes trash and linen for proper disposal after surgical procedures.
** 2. Transports patients from units to OR and SDS.
** 3. Coordinates cart exchanges and linen supplies from understanding of pre-printed audit sheet. Possesses basic understanding of inventory control and case cart preparation. Bundles add on cases as assigned.
** 4. Restocks blanket warmers as needed.
** 5. Transports and handles specimens, and maintains specimen container supply using appropriate PPE. Transports blood and blood products to and from lab as needed for immediate patient needs or as requested for stock or pending procedure requirements.
** 6. Performs temperature checks on surgical blood, drug and food refrigerators and reports discrepancies to the OR Charge RN.
** 7. Obtains post-op beds.
** 8. Restocks OR rooms, inner core and outer core. Checks supplies throughout the day to ensure there is no depletion of supplies including sterile trays, equipment and peel packs.
** 9. Maintains kitchen supplies and performs weekly refrigerator cleaning.
** 10. Cleans room turnovers and maintains decontamination carts using basic PPE and decontamination procedures.
** 11. Positions and/or aid in the positioning of patients for surgical or anesthesia procedures.
** 12. Understands and maintains aseptic guidelines in all of Perioperative Services.
** 13. Demonstrates age specific competency as per unit requirements.
** 14. Consistently demonstrates the ability to adapt to change in work load and assignments.
** 15. Completes assignments, by prioritizing appropriately, to provide consistent quality and quantity of work.
** 16. Functions with awareness of risk management and safety issues and reports concerns appropriately.
** 17. Attends staff meetings and/or reads staff meeting minutes, arranges for follow-up with OR Staff Development on questions or concerns.
** 18. Follows all hospital policies/procedures.
** 19. Maintains a complete understanding of the Arnot Health Emergency Procedures and roles pertinent to Fire Safety, Code Blue, Disaster and Hazard procedures.
** 20. Develops/maintains effective working relationships with staff and other members of the health care team.
** 21. Is responsible for attending all annual mandatory educational programs as required by position.
** 22. Employee understands and demonstrates the importance of satisfying the needs of the customer/patient by interacting with him/her in a friendly and caring way, being attentive to the customer’s needs, both psychologically and physically, and by taking the initiative to maintain communication with the customer in order to provide a secure and pleasant experience with the Arnot Health. Communicates and hands off report to next shift.

EDUCATION:
High school education or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE:
Prefer experience in a hospital setting.
CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR) REQUIREMENTS:
Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 30 days of hire date.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands described here represent those demands that must be met by any employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Physical effort required includes: lifting at waist level or below with assistance for patient handling accounts for 15% of the job. The amount to be lifted is variable, based on patient size and use of assistive devices and other staff members. Lifting for material handling above and below waist level accounts for 30% of the job. The amount to be lifted typically ranges from 35lbs to 50 lbs. Lifting of up to 100 lbs happens occasionally with lifting a soiled bag of linen. Bilateral carrying accounts for 15% of the job. Must be able to carry up to 35 lbs. Pushing accounts for 35% of the job. Must be able to push up to 16.8 lbs of force. Pulling for 5% of the job. Must be able to pull with up to 12.2 lbs of force. In accomplishing the above tasks, employees will also need to be able to perform frequent walking and/or standing (40% of the job), frequent trunk rotation, and bending (35-40% of the job), frequent reaching and handling (60% of the job). The physical elements here overlap with those noted above (e.g. standing and walking occurs while pushing and pulling), thus the percentages will not equal 100%.
