This posting is for a Transportation Worker II position in the Division 9 Roadside Environmental office. This position performs a wide range of progressively responsible tasks in vegetation management, including erosion control and plant bed maintenance. The work involves installing erosion control, mowing, and maintaining plant material along NCDOT rights-of–way. The work also includes skilled operation, inspection, and maintenance of equipment including trucks, tractors, tractor attachments, specialized mowers, mulch blower, hydro seeder, and other similar equipment, as well as hand and power tools. The position may routinely set up traffic control for work zones and ensure proper application rates of landscape materials including seed, fertilizer, limestone, and pesticides.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:
+ Knowledge of vegetation management including, but not limited to, shrubs, trees, fertilizer, etc. using sound horticultural practices.
+ Experience in applying herbicides to control weeds and brush.
+ Experience operating equipment designed for all aspects of landscape operations.
+ Experience in at least one piece of Category B equipment (asphalt distributor, front end loader, dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, mulch blower, sod seeder, tractor with sprayer attachments, brush chipper, conventional pesticide applicator, hydroseeder, skid steer).
+ Experience in correctly applying herbicides and pesticides in accordance with the label, as well as proper storage and disposal techniques.
Additional Expectations:
Safety-toed shoes required.
The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements:
