    This posting is for a Regional Traffic Safety Engineer position in the Eastern & OBX Regional Traffic Engineering office based in Fayetteville, Cumberland County, NC. This position is responsible for performing a full range of traffic safety field investigations including research and analysis for highway safety improvement programs and fatal crash locations. This position works primarily in Highway Division 6.

     

    Collaborates and coordinates with NCDOT Highway Divisions, Regional Traffic, Mobility & Safety and DOT Headquarters staff and internal and external safety partners to deliver a full range of traffic studies, safety, operational and regulatory investigations, problem diagnoses, countermeasure assessments, and development of effective and constructible solutions. Extensive travel, active site work, and year-round exposure to traffic and field conditions are required. Investigative and analytical work performed requires complex problem research and problem solving and the ability to prioritize, make, document, and defend independent evidence driven decisions under pressure and constraints. The Engineer will also perform special safety studies & safety initiatives that support NCDOT's Mission & Goals and NCDOT's Strategic Highway Safety Plan, as well as critical customer service responsiveness, sensitivity, and delivery.

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

    + Experience in transportation analysis and transportation investigation techniques.

    Additional Expectations:

    The Regional Traffic Safety Field Engineer position requires knowledge of the principles and practices of transportation engineering and highway safety and the demonstrated ability to prescribe data and evidence driven solutions to often complex and sensitive traffic safety, mobility, and engineering problems. Applicants must demonstrate familiarity with and ability to skillfully apply: Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, Highway Safety Manual, ITE Traffic Engineering Handbook, AASHTO Greenbook, Traffic Engineering Accident Analysis System, Microsoft Office Productivity Suite, Traffic Engineering Accident Analysis System (TEAAS), Traffic Engineering Practices and Polices Legal Guide, and North Carolina and Federal codes, regulations and statutes.

     

    Applicants are expected to have the ability to work cooperatively and collaborate with diverse citizen and stakeholder groups. Registration as a Professional Engineer in North Carolina is preferred. Work requires ability to safely and frequently travel long distances to conduct outdoor, day and night field investigations through the full range of live traffic, environmental, and terrain conditions.

    Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

     

    Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
