    Position Overview and Responsibilities:

    The Environmental Specialist II, position number 37020086, is in the Division of Environmental Assessment and Restoration’s Chemistry Program, Nutrients section in Tallahassee.The incumbent works as a Chemist and will be responsible for preparing and analyzing environmental samples for nutrients, inorganic anions, and other related compounds. This work is critical for the assessment of water quality and restoration projects for the State of Florida.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    + Knowledge of the terminology, principles and techniques of chemical research, analysis or testing.

    + Knowledge of the procedures, techniques and equipment used in laboratory testing and analysis.

    + Skill in the use of laboratory equipment and materials.

    + Skill in performing laboratory tests, or analyses, or preparations.

    + Ability to perform all calculations and assessments necessary to report data in compliance with all applicable rules.

    + Ability to understand and follow technical instructions relating to laboratory testing and analysis.

    + Ability to work independently.

    + Ability to perform laboratory tests and analyses.

    + Ability to perform basic arithmetical calculations.

    + Ability to maintain and troubleshoot analytical instrumentation.

    + Ability to utilize problem-solving techniques.

    + Ability to keep accurate and complete records.

    + Ability to plan and organize daily workload.

    + Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

    + Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

    + Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

    + Ability to work a daily schedule from 9 am to 6 pm within a 40-hour workweek.

    + Ability to work after hours or on weekends if requested by the supervisor.

    + Ability to stand for long periods of time, perform repetitive movements, and lift and carry up to 30 lb. weights for short distances.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    At least 5 years of verifiable related experience in chemistry, environmental science, natural sciences, biological sciences, or physical sciences. Post-secondary degrees from an accredited college or university with a major in chemistry, environmental science, natural sciences, biological sciences, or physical sciences may be used as an alternative for the required years of experience on a year-for-year basis.
