The Diabetes Research Institute has an exciting opportunity for a full time Research Associate 3, SOM position. The incumbent assumes responsibility for the design and performance of research focused on the development of novel experimental therapies for human malignancies. The incumbent contributes to collaborations with scientists within the University of Miami or elsewhere. Moreover, this individual works as part of a team and assists with the maintenance of laboratory equipment, protocols, and supplies.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
+ Maintains daily operations and performs procedures related to new and on-going research projects.
+ Assists with ordering, purchasing, and maintenance of all required reagents and supplies for laboratory activities, and monitors and maintains inventory of supplies and stocks.
+ Assists with the maintenance of institutional biosafety and animal care protocols, laboratory safety records, and standard operating procedures.
+ Performs and assists other research staff with standard laboratory techniques.
+ Develops, adapts, and implements new laboratory procedures.
+ Records, organizes, and writes up experimental results for submission of manuscripts and for scientific presentations.
+ Keeps abreast of latest literature in the field and searches for references to technical problems.
+ Maintains current knowledge of the methods and techniques related to the specific field of research.
+ Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

+ Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field required
+ Minimum 5 years of relevant experience
Department Specific Functions
Experience in Histology:
The primary responsibility for this position is the overall operation of the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) Histology core facility to support the research of DRI investigators. This includes preparing human and animal tissue samples by fixing, processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining them onto slides for microscopic examination, allowing for the analysis of tissue as needed by the investigators. This requires precise handling of specimens, operating specialized equipment like microtomes and stainers, and adhering to strict quality control measures within a laboratory setting. In addition to the preparation of samples for downstream analysis, other duties include maintaining quality controls with regards to reagent and equipment, ordering supplies as needed and general maintenance of the histology lab.
Key responsibilities include:
• Specimen reception and processing:
+ Receiving tissue samples from surgery, biopsy, or autopsy, logging them accurately, and initiating the fixation process with appropriate chemicals.
+ Tissue embedding:
+ Surrounding the tissue with paraffin wax to create a solid block for sectioning.
+ Microtomy:
+ Cutting thin sections of tissue using a microtome, ensuring proper orientation and minimizing artifacts.
+ Staining techniques:
+ Applying various stains to tissue sections to highlight specific cellular components and features for analysis.
+ Slide preparation:
+ Mounting tissue sections onto microscope slides.
+ Quality control:
+ Performing routine checks on reagents, stains, and equipment to maintain accuracy and consistency.
+ Special staining procedures:
+ Performing specialized staining techniques like immunohistochemistry when required.
+ Frozen section preparation:
+ Quickly preparing tissue sections for immediate analysis during surgery using a cryostat.
+ Data entry and recordkeeping:
+ Accurately documenting specimen details, staining procedures, and results in the laboratory information system.
+ Equipment maintenance:
+ Performing routine cleaning and maintenance of laboratory instruments.
