The Diabetes Research Institute has an exciting opportunity for a full time Entry Scientist, SOM position. The incumbent supports assigned research activities for the department. The appointee also furthers the University’s research goals and objectives and advances the University’s reputation as a leader in the field.

+ Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
+ Ph.D., M.D. or other doctoral level degree in relevant field.
+ No prior experience required.
Department Specific Functions
The incumbent serves as the Manager of the DRI Pre-Clinical and Translational Models Core (the Core) that primarily conducts procedures in rodents and possibly other vertebrate animals in support of investigators at the Diabetes Research Institute.
• The incumbent will direct and supervise all core staff and oversee the day to day operation of the core.
• Coordinate, supervise and train Core for general lab responsibilities, including but not limited to, proper maintenance of lab equipment, accurate data collection, inventory, purchasing, and stocking of reagents and other lab supplies. • Knowledge of all applicable institutional and federal regulations for the conduct of research involving vertebrate animals. • Supervise the handling, and pre-post procedural care of lab animals utilized by Core users including coordinating and supervising the daily recording of results, monitoring of lab analysis and metabolic assessment to ensure compliance with relevant regulatory regulations Coordinate and participate in all surgical procedures and related research activities related to the core, ensuring the Core is utilized according to established policies and procedure following GLP standards • Serve as liaison between the DRI and the Division of Veterinary Resources, in all issues related to this area of research
• Participate actively with researchers in the experimental design, development and implementation of research projects related to Core services., including draft and review IACUC protocols from Core Users for feasibility and compliance with IACUC guidelines and established Core procedures as needed • Develop and implement protocols for experimental animals and for collection and preparation of tissues and biological samples as required by core users
• Surgical training and cell processing training of Core users, trainees, students, visitors, and fellows as needed. • Generate and maintain current cost structure for all Core services; ensure timely billing of the same to appropriate accounts.
• Work with Senior Management at DRI to ensure Core operates within annual budget parameters and can adequately meet Institutional needs in terms of project prioritization.• Assist with the preparation of scientific papers, annual reports and presentations as required. • Good interpersonal communications skills and ability to work well w/cross-functional teams. • Fluency in written and spoken English.
