    Job Summary

    The Oregon IPM Center invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 12-month, fixed-term Professor of Practice Climatologist / Ecologist position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Director as appropriate.

     

    The Oregon IPM Center is looking to recruit a Professor of Practice inClimate-Smart Precision Pest Ecologywith strengths in novel approaches to integrated pest management within a broader agroecological context, integrating climate change, ecosystem services, and pest management. Candidates with interests and experience in applied research emphasizing novel plant protection strategies drawn from applying modern geospatial techniques from field- to landscape scales to improve understanding of pest ecology are particularly encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate will use data-driven techniques and approaches integrating field, climate/weather, and landscape data to develop “precision” pest management within an agroecology context.

     

    The position is committed to research, outreach, and professional and university service as appropriate to the faculty rank. This position will help maintain strong interactions among the Oregon IPM Center’s basic and applied research missions and complement existing programs in the College of Agriculture.

     

    An essential aspect of this integrated and interdisciplinary position is that relevant and applicable information generated from basic and applied research is promptly delivered to respective constituents.

     

    Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences or a related field with expertise in integrated pest management, precision agriculture, pest ecology, and modeling.

     

    Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate experience and scholarly credentials, including publications in peer-reviewed journals, success in attracting extramural funding, evidence of extension and/or outreach activities, and evidence of communication. Candidates must also firmly commit to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice.

     

    This position supports the development of science-based, ecologically informed models that can help agricultural decision-makers manage and monitor pests, including invasive species, their hosts, and their natural enemies.

    Key Responsibilities

    80% Research and Development

     

    Conduct applied research activities and demonstration projects to develop models to forecast the phenology and effect of climate on target species, validate model forecasts, design web apps, and collect, analyze, and interpret original research data that emphasize multi-tactic practices, management and novel technologies.

     

    + Collaboration is expected with colleagues in other disciplines, such as entomology, weed science, plat pathology, and related disciplines, including professional colleagues, industry members, and field representatives.

    + Evaluate and document the impacts of programs and communicate the results to scientific and non-scientific audiences.

    + Provide educational opportunities using peer-reviewed publications, professional meetings, scientific and commodity group presentations, extension events and electronic communication (i.e., web sites, publications, video conferencing and other online methods).

    + Supervise Faculty Research Assistants, Postdocs, Bioscience Research Technicians, Graduate Students, etc. to expand staff capacity within the program, serve broader needs, and reach more people.

    + Individually and as part of teams, secure outside grants, and contracts and/or service fees to support and enhance applied research programs and service activities. The faculty member will be expected to meet all reporting requirements of the funding sources, department, college, and university.

    + Keep abreast of, and interpret scientific, technological and industry developments and trends at state, regional, national, and international levels.

    + Discover new knowledge and develop creative solutions and applications for problems related to aspects of phenology and effect of climate on target species, model forecasts, design web apps, and collect, analyze, and interpret original research data emphasizing multi-tactic practices, management, and novel technologies.

    + Research discoveries should be communicated to the scientific community, Extension audiences, and practitioners using innovative and contemporary tools in both oral and written venues. Communication includes refereed journal articles, Extension publications, presentations to state, regional, and national professional groups, other outlets as appropriate.

    + Scholarly and creative work is intellectual work whose significance is validated by peers, and that is communicated. Emphasis in scholarship should be placed on outcomes that recognize activities as a professional practitioner as defined by the incumbent’s position description.

    + To achieve promotion, a scholarship for this position must include peer-reviewed materials that are durable and findable in the web environment. These are typically of the two types shown below but as our communication worlds change, other types of scholarship may fit these durability and findable criteria:

    + Publications in peer‐reviewed journals, which might encompass description and evaluation of novel community‐based professional practice or research application, program development and innovation, outcomes of innovative programs and/or services, definitive professional practice reviews, or case reports.

    + Authorship of extension publications, local or regional “practice” publications, book chapters, other educational materials, and electronic information delivery media if they must be peer-reviewed before dissemination or if there is evidence of their adoption and use by peers.

    + Invited presentations, poster, and podium presentations, and published abstracts and/or proceedings at state, regional, and national levels, provided that evidence of peer validation is provided.

    + Documented impact due to local or regional adoption of improved practices, methods, or programs.

    + Secured competitive grants and contracts appropriate for the scope and focus of the faculty member’s position.

    + Named inventor of protected intellectual property in the faculty member’s field.

    + Awards recognizing community, professional and/or scientific achievements

    + Fellowships in national professional and/or scientific organizations

    + Requests to serve as a technical advisor to government agencies, industry, or professional groups

    5% Service

     

    + Serve as a liaison to area organizations that serve the position’s target audiences.

    + Develop and maintain year-round public relations connections to relevant groups (e.g., Climate Smart and others).

    + Participate in professional development opportunities, including in-service training, international volunteer technical consultancies, and active involvement in professional domestic and international societies and associations as appropriate.

    + Provide mentorship for newer faculty and students where applicable.

    + Participate in appropriate professional and scientific organizations specific to the position discipline.

    + Maintain active membership in appropriate professional organizations depending on the discipline.

    What You Will Need

    A Master’s in ecology, climatology, or a field closely related to the position’s duties.

     

    Demonstrated ability to carry out independent research, including data and statistical analysis, ecological modeling, and programming in R and Linux.

     

    Demonstrated ability to gather, analyze, interpret, and present data and research ideas in R, Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and other relevant software.

     

    Demonstrated ability to write grant proposals and publish papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

     

    Excellent written and oral communication skills.

     

    Strong drive to learn and think creatively.

     

    Must be reliable, detail-oriented, and have strong interpersonal and task management skills.

     

    Must champion justice, equality, diversity and inclusion.

     

    Able to get a pesticide license within 6 months of employment.

     

    This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

     

    This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

    What We Would Like You to Have

    A Ph.D. in ecology, climatology, or a field closely related to the position’s duties.

     

    Strong quantitative and analytical skills in integrated pest management, statistics, geographic information systems, and computer science.

     

    Experience developing web apps in R using Shiny and other innovative tools.

     

    Team player.

    Working Conditions / Work Schedule

    Office environment with no physical requirements. Standard weekday hours.

     

    This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
