    Summary The Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center is seeking a highly qualified candidate to fill an intermittent Physical Therapy Assistant position. Responsibilities The duties listed are for the Full Performance Level of the position. Individuals selected at lower grades will perform duties in a developmental capacity until reaching the Full Performance Level. Major duties include but are not limited to: Reviews Physical Therapy documentation and medical records. Appropriately identifies pertinent information including indications, contraindications, precautions, safety considerations and expected outcomes. Recognize changes in patient's physical, mental, and/or medical status. Effectively communicates with the supervising physical therapist when there are significant changes in the patient's medical status, physician referral, or when the criticality and complexity of the patient is beyond the knowledge, skill and abilities of the CPTA Interprets the plan of care and patient goals matching them to selected interventions based on basic biological and medical science and incorporating contemporary physical therapy evidenced based practice. Independently implements the selected interventions. Determines outcomes of the intervention, appropriately progressing and modifying the interventions as indicated within the scope of the plan of care. Can motivate a wide variety of patients to obtain effective participation in the physical program. Work with a high degree of independence and professional judgment in planning and carrying out treatment program. Provides in service to staff on various topics relating to patient care or safety factors. Attends scheduled in service education as provided in-house or off station. Applies appropriate methods and techniques in solving problems related to physical therapy Work Schedule: Intermittent, your schedule will be determined between you and the supervisor however there will be no set or guaranteed hours. Qualifications Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Individuals appointed under authority of 38 U.S.C. chapters 73 or 74, to serve in a direct patient-care capacity in VHA must be proficient in written and spoken English. Experience and Education: Associate degree from an accredited community college, junior college, college or university in a physical therapy assistant education program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education. OR Graduate of foreign physical therapy assistant degree programs that meet the educational requirement and have successfully passed the National Physical Therapy Exam (NPTE) for PTAs. OR Graduate of military physical therapy assistant programs that meet the educational requirement and have successfully passed the NPTE for PTAs. A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education. Licensure. Individuals must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice physical therapy assistance in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Non-licensed applicants who otherwise meet the minimum qualification requirements, but who do not possess state licensure, may be appointed, pending licensure, as a graduate PTA at the GS-05 on a full-time temporary appointment not to exceed two years. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-05 None beyond the basic requirements. GS-06 In addition to the basic requirements, candidates must possess one year of experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level and demonstrate all the KSAs below: Knowledge of evidence based physical therapy practice. Ability to perform physical therapy data collection and use of objective measures in order to carry out patient plan of care. Ability to modify treatment approaches, within the scope of the established treatment plans, to reflect patients' changing needs. Skill in promoting physical therapy services by providing training and interventions within the assigned areas. GS-07 In addition to the basic requirements, candidates must possess one year of experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level and demonstrate all the KSAs below: Ability to perform in depth chart review to implement treatment plans. Ability to independently use objective measures to assess progress, in accordance with the plan of care for complex patient cases. Knowledge of contemporary physical therapy practice. Ability to consult with the PT to assess progress, modify treatment and set discharge plan. GS-08 In addition to the basic requirements, candidates must possess one year of experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level and demonstrate all the KSAs below: Ability to independently implement treatment plan using knowledge of techniques related to the patient's disability and needs. Ability to independently provide varied and multifaceted physical therapy interventions based on the established care plan (e.g., therapeutic exercise, balance, body mechanics, flexibility, strength, gait training, neuromotor development, physical agents, functional training, etc.). Knowledge of physical therapy data collection and assessment techniques in order to perform specific interventions and to monitor and capture progress of the patient/client. Ability to instruct patient on varied interventions to provide materials to enhance compliance with home programs. Ability to modify treatment techniques based on the learning needs and perceptions of the patient. Ability to identify critical changes (e.g. vital signs, pain, mobility and alertness) in patient conditions to determine their medical and functional status. Ability to work with PTs and other interdisciplinary healthcare team members to evaluate patient information for planning, modifying and coordinating treatment programs and discharge planning. Preferred Experience: A broad base of knowledge with inpatient and out patient treatment/assessment. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-05 to GS-08.
