    Job Summary and Qualifications

     

    As the Director Employee Injury and Workers’ Compensation, you will be responsible for overseeing the management of the Texas Employee Health and Safety Program (EHSP) ERISA benefit plan, general, workers’ compensation and professional liability claims. Your duties include program design and administration, claims management, loss prevention and education. This position requires continuous analysis of program components to achieve the most cost-efficient solution for the Company and local management.

    Job Responsibilities:

    + Oversee the management of workers’ compensation and Texas Employee Health and Safety Program (EHSP) claims.

    + Provide employee injury program training and support to Company facilities to identify, eliminate or reduce occupational injuries and mitigate workers' compensation and employee injury related costs.

    + Supervise the management of general, professional liability and workers’ compensation claims by employed claim supervisors or contracted vendors for claims management, consulting, medical bill review, systems and medical case management.

    + Ensure accountability among the department for appropriate documentation within and maintenance of the electronic claims system.

    + Administer, evaluate on an on-going basis, and revise as needed the cost allocation system that a) encourages facilities to provide a safe work environment for employees, b) promotes the management of medical treatment and lost time associated with employee injuries, and c) allows facilities to immediately recognize the impact of their efforts in managing employee injury costs.

    + Enforce the department and company strategy and philosophy for effective claims management.

    + Participate and counsel team members as appropriate, in settlement negotiations, mediations, arbitrations and trials as required for optimal outcomes.

    + Maintain current knowledge of laws and rules affecting liability claims management decisions; educate and train staff.

    + Develop and maintain effective, efficient and respectful working relationships with Injury Coordinators, Human Resources Risk Managers, Patient Safety Directors, CEOs and Division leaders.

    + Coordinate with other departments within the organization to improve programs or resolve issues (Legal, Employee Relations, Benefits, Government Relations.

    + Develop and implement the Employee Safety and Security Incentive Program

    + Coordinate, manage and participate in regularly scheduled calls with Division Leadership to discuss employee injury trends and opportunities for improvement.

    + Ensure accountability among the department for approval of claims expenses and litigation fees.

    + Train and educate facility-based staff on employee injury program, manager responsibilities and facility results. Collaborate in the development, production and presentation of material at education conferences and/or orientation of new Workers’ Compensation / Employee Injury Coordinators.

    + Provide case reserving and settlement authority within established levels individually and for his/her team and ensure appropriate documentation of the same.

    + Identify appropriate cases and prepare those for presentation to the AVP, VP and Claims Committee for settlement authority and to excess and reinsurers as needed.

    + Participate as needed in the placement or renewal of relevant insurance coverages

    Job Requirements:

    + Bachelor's Degree is preferred

    + 7+ years of experience in Liability and workers’ compensation experience, preferably in healthcare and preferably in multi-state environment is preferred

    + Certification in risk management or insurance is a plus, such as CPHRM, ARM or CPCU is preferred

    + Knowledge of workers’ compensation laws common to all jurisdictions and general regulatory compliance issues related to employee injuries is required

    + Proficient computer skills with word processing, Microsoft Office, internet searches (social media) and database competency is required

    + Critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills is required

    + Ability to establish and maintain positive customer relationships is required

    + Experience in negotiation is required

    + Ability to prioritize, handle multiple tasks with due dates is required

    + Ability to multi-task and work collaboratively with various departments and individuals is required

    + Effective oral and written communication skills is required
