    Your Specific Responsibilities:

    Assists in the planning and fabrication of metal fixtures, including welding, metal cutting and machining.

     

    Assists in the planning, construction, fabrication of non-metal test fixtures and set ups such as concrete and wood.

     

    Assists in instrumentation of test specimens for on-site testing and instrumentation of bridges in the field.

     

    Assists in maintaining lab facilities and equipment to ensure proper, safe and efficient operation.

     

    Drives a bridge load test vehicle (CDL) to the testing sites throughout the state and operates the vehicle during testing operations. Drives the Lab vehicles with the transporter to pick up or deliver materials throughout the state.

     

    Prepares detailed take-offs of materials and labor for building test specimens and components and assists in purchasing materials as needed.

     

    Operates and maintains Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines.

     

    Assists contractors engaged in research contract projects.

    The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Knowledge of:

    + Knowledge of fabrication in wood, metal and concrete

    + Knowledge of construction techniques, and the ability to apply those techniques

    + Knowledge of welding details and equipment and the ability to weld different metals

    + Knowledge of Safety Practices and OSHA regulations

    + Knowledge of computers and software such as Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) and Microsoft (MS) Office.

    Skills in:

    + Skill in operating heavy construction equipment

    Ability to:

    + The ability to read and interpret construction plans and the ability to apply quantitative techniques

    + Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments

    + Ability to communicate engineering information effectively verbally and writing

    + Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others

    + Ability to operate a wide variety of tools, both hand and power including metal machining

    + Ability to lift 50pounds, climb ladders and work from a mobile platform (work from heights)

    Licensure/Registration/Certification Requirements:

    + Class “A” CDL

    Other Job-Related Requirements:

    This position will be required to respond before, during and following emergency situations.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    High School Diploma or its equivalent

     

    This position requires a valid Class (A) driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:

     

    + three (3) or more moving violations in the past three (3) years that accumulate three (3) or more points per violation;

    + any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years;

    + a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years; and

    + a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction, in the past four (4) years.

     

    Your driving record will be reviewed and the status of your driver license confirmed.

     

    In order to be eligible for hire into a position requiring a Commercial Driver License (CDL), applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query. Click here (https://clearinghouse.fmcsa.dot.gov/Register) to register for the Clearinghouse. A mandatory drug screening will be performed on the successful applicant.

     

    Applicants hired for this position with a Class E license will be required to obtain a Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) within 60 days of appointment, attend CDL training and successfully pass the CDL licensing test and obtain a CDL Class A license with air brakes within 10 months after appointment to the position. Once the CLP is obtained, candidates must register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a query. Upon hire, this position also requires the applicant to have an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy. The costs of the initial CDL training and initial testing will be paid by the Department, subject to available funding. An employee will be given three chances to pass the license requirements. The employee will be responsible for paying for the initial CLP fee, as well as any additional training and re-test costs, and the CDL fee. If the employee voluntarily separates from the Department within two (2) years of obtaining their CDL, the employee will be responsible for paying the costs of the initial training and testing.
