Job Purpose
The Safety Specialist is responsible for implementing and overseeing safety processes/programs that protect our employees, customers, and assets to achieve an injury free culture. This includes managing process safety, occupational safety, incident response / reporting, and regulatory compliance. The role ensures that all operations meet or exceed safety standards set by Mitsubishi Chemical Group, Federal, State and local regulations (OSHA), and industry-specific guidelines.
Principal Accountabilities
Duties and Responsibilities:
+ Monitor and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations (OSHA, NFPA, EPA, etc.). This includes staying updated on changes in laws and regulations and keeping management informed on these changes and their impacts.
+ Developing, implementing, and updating safety policies, procedures, and guidelines to promote a safe and healthy workplace.
+ Monitors for change management (MOC) application and provides support for this process.
+ Risk Assessment and Management: Identifying potential hazards and conducting risk assessments to evaluate the severity and likelihood of accidents and impacts. Implementing control measures to mitigate identified risks.
+ Training and Education: Providing training and education programs for employees on EHS topics, including safety procedures, emergency response, hazardous materials handling, and environmental stewardship.
+ Investigating accidents, incidents, and near-misses to determine root causes and develop corrective and preventive actions to prevent recurrence. Reporting on timely basis as required by MCA and federal, state and local regulations.
+ Safety Audits and Inspections: Conducting regular safety audits and inspections of facilities, equipment, and processes to identify and address potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety standards.
+ Support JSA (Job Safety Analysis) development and ensure that these exist for all job tasks and are reviewed on a regular basis and updated for changes etc.
+ Emergency Preparedness and Response: Developing and implementing emergency response plans and procedures. Conducting drills and training sessions to ensure employees are prepared to respond effectively to emergencies.
+ Maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS), safety signage, and documentation to ensure compliance and to ensure clear understanding at point of use.
+ Health and Wellness Programs: Developing and promoting health and wellness programs to enhance employee well-being and reduce occupational health risks.
+ Ergonomics: Implementing ergonomic programs to prevent musculoskeletal disorders and improve workplace ergonomics.
+ Safety Equipment and PPE: Ensuring the availability and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety equipment. Monitoring and maintaining safety equipment to ensure it is in good working condition.
+ Data Collection and Reporting: Collecting, analyzing, and reporting safety data, including incident rates, leading and lagging safety metrics. Providing regular reports to senior management and regulatory authorities (OSHA 300 log etc.)
+ Continuous Improvement: Analyzing data to identify areas for improvement including leading and lagging indicators. Leading continuous improvement initiatives to enhance safety performance. Implementing best practices, new technologies, and innovative approaches to improve safety and environmental outcomes.
+ Collaboration and Communication: Collaborating with other departments, such as operations, human resources, and engineering, to integrate safety considerations into business processes. Communicating safety information and updates to employees and management.
+ Contractor and Vendor Management: Ensuring that contractors and vendors comply with the organization's safety policies and standards. Conducting safety evaluations and audits of contractors and vendors.
+ Recordkeeping and Documentation: Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of safety activities, including training records, incident reports, audit findings, and compliance documentation.
+ Budget Management: Managing the safety budget, ensuring resources are allocated effectively to support safety initiatives and improvements.
Knowledge / Skills / Experience
Qualifications:
+ Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a related technical field.
+ 5 years experience in industrial safety related role.
+ Professional certifications such as OSHA 30, CHST, CSP, or HAZWOPER (40-hour) is a plus.
+ Extensive knowledge of OSHA, DOT, NFPA, other governmental regulations and laws
+ Knowledge of Safety Management systems ( ISO 45001 or OSHA Star elements) and Process Safety
+ Good interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills
+ Knowledge of federal and state regulations – State of Arizona and city of Phoenix is a plus.
+ Knowledge of root cause analysis and methods is a plus.
+ Proficient in MS Office products and safety software platforms (DNV)
+ Occasional travel required < 20%

+ **The salary range for this position is $87,800 - $109,800. Factors such as scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, job-related skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and business considerations may influence base pay offered. This salary will be subject to a geographic adjustment (according to a specific city and state), if an authorization is granted to work outside of the location listed in this posting.**
