    Job Description

    Following established guidelines and procedures, the individual in this position provides a unique service to attorneys and the Michigan Legislature by processing legislative documents using customized Microsoft Word software. The individual performs support service duties for bill documents as they move through the legislative process. This individual also performs general office tasks and may assume primary responsibility for other specific job functions. The individual works under the direction of the Support Services Section Manager.

     

    The LSB Legal Division is part of the Michigan Legislative Council and provides the Michigan Legislature with nonpartisan legal counsel, bill drafting, law compilation, and publishing, and related services that support the lawmaking process.

    Required Education and Experience

     

    + High school graduate or possession of GED certificate required.

    + Minimum of three years’ work experience in an office setting preferred.

    + Intermediate-level proficiency in Microsoft Office required, including experience with Microsoft Word and database entry and use.

    + Strong interpersonal and organizational skills required.

    + Knowledge of the legislative process and bill drafting terminology desired.

    + Candidate must possess a high level of initiative and be able to work independently, have strong customer service skills, exhibit a team-oriented approach, and be able to perform multiple tasks and work accurately with attention to detail under time constraints.

    + Must be willing and able to work occasional overtime and irregular hours as required, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

    + Equivalent combination of education and experience of above acceptable.

    The Legislative Council is a nonpartisan legislative information and service agency. This is an unclassified, non-Civil Service position in State government. All Legislative Council employees are considered “at-will,” except for LSB Printing Division union members. Employees are required to be non-partisan and maintain confidentiality.

    Leave Time

     

    Full-time employees receive between 15 and 35 vacation leave days per year and13 sick days per year.

    Legislative Council employees receive 13 scheduled holidays each year.

    Alternative Work Schedules

    Flexible work schedules are available in some jobs. Flexible schedules may be limited to certain time periods per year.

    Insurance and Other Benefits

    Insurances include health, vision, dental and life. Employees also have the option to purchase voluntary insurances for additional life, accidental death, long term disability, long term care, and legal services, to name a few. Premiums vary for these insurances. Flexible spending accounts for medical expenses and child care are also available.

    Deferred Compensation

    Employees may invest income in a tax-deferred retirement investment program. The state offers two optional deferred compensation plans, the 457 and 401(k). Employees decide the amount deducted from each paycheck.

    Retirement

    Employees receive a minimum 4% state contribution toward their defined contribution retirement fund. If an employee elects to contribute more, the state will match that percentage (up to 3%).
