Position Summary:
Strong Memorial Hospital is seeking an exceptional leader to serve as the Director of Sterile Processing (SPD) — a critical role for ensuring surgical excellence and patient safety. We are looking for a visionary, operations-driven leader who thrives in dynamic environments, champions cross-functional collaboration, and leads leaders with clarity and purpose.
The Director of SPD oversees a high-performing team including an SPD Operations Manager, Assistant Managers, Educator, and Administrative Assistant. This role provides strategic direction and hands-on operational leadership, ensuring the safe, accurate, and efficient sterilization, packaging, and delivery of surgical instruments across all perioperative and ancillary service lines.
Key Responsibilities:
+ **Operational Excellence:** Lead daily operations of the SPD, optimizing workflows to ensure timely and error-free processing and delivery of sterile instruments. Champion Lean methodologies and continuous improvement practices.
+ **Quality & Compliance:** Design and drive a robust quality improvement program focused on achieving 100% accuracy. Ensure full compliance with **Joint Commission** , **AAMI** , and all state and federal regulations.
+ **Data-Driven Leadership:** Develop and maintain a performance dashboard with meaningful KPIs shared monthly with Perioperative leadership and SPD staff. Use analytics to inform decisions and drive measurable outcomes.
+ **Strategic Collaboration:** Partner with leaders across Perioperative Services, Supply Chain, and the broader health system to align SPD services with institutional goals. Serve as a liaison on key committees and initiatives that influence hospital-wide surgical and procedural operations.
+ **Financial Stewardship:** Lead the SPD’s budgeting process, inventory integrity, and capital planning. Oversee instrument procurement, repairs, and replacements, and ensure fiscal accountability in collaboration with PS Finance and Supply Chain.
+ **People Leadership:** Inspire and develop a culture of trust, accountability, and excellence. Provide guidance, mentorship, and clear direction to SPD leaders and staff. Ensure strong onboarding, training, and professional development programs are in place and foster a high-engagement environment.
+ **Talent Management:** Oversee all aspects of staffing including hiring, performance management, disciplinary action, and succession planning. Collaborate with HR and the Director of Nursing to ensure equitable practices and alignment with institutional goals.

RESPONSIBILITIES
+ Directs the day-to-day operations of SPD in cleaning, sterilizing, packaging, and delivering of sterile instruments to the operating room and ancillary areas of SMH.
+ Develops and manages a robust quality improvement process that targets 100% accuracy in delivery of carts, pans, and packaged instruments. Evaluates and improves quality and efficiency of services provided by formulating controls, statistical surveys, communications with user departments, and active participation in the quality improvement programs of Perioperative Services (PS) and the institution.
+ In cooperation with the leadership of Perioperative Services, develops, maintains, and reports a dashboard summarizing SPD performance. Metrics will be made available to Perioperative Services leadership and SPD staff at least monthly.
+ Ensures adherence to applicable state and federal regulations, as well as Joint Commission standards regarding sterile processing. Ensures adherence to standards and guidelines of the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation.
+ Participates in the operational and capital budgetary process in cooperation with the PS Finance Administrator and PS leadership. Ensure that management standards for cost awareness and budget control are maintained.
+ Coordinates with the Hospital supply chain as it pertains to sterile processing. Works effectively with the Supply Chain Manager in PS to ensure coordination of durable and disposable supplies delivery.
+ Evaluate and ensure the integrity of ongoing inventory control. Provides oversight for receipt of ordered instruments and equipment. Coordinates repair and replacement of instruments as required.
+ Chairs committees or represents department, as assigned by Perioperative Program Administrator.
+ Supervises the staff of the SPD facility, with delegation of some authority and responsibility to maintain control of the SPD functions. Interprets Hospital, University, and Perioperative services policies to staff. Ensures development and maintenance of SPD employee education and development program.
+ At least annually evaluates staff performance, determines disciplinary action, recommends promotions and salary adjustments, and performs other related personnel actions. Coordinates with the Human Resources business partner for Perioperative Services and the Director of Nursing on personnel issues.
+ Hires or makes recommendations for hiring according to the University of Rochester Affirmative Action plans and goals.
QUALIFICATIONS:
+ Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, including at least two years at a managerial level; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
+ Master's degree, equivalent course work, or specialized experience in an appropriate field related to the assignment is desirable.
+ Prefer 3-5 years, experience as Director or Assistant Director of a Sterile Processing facility in a healthcare setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
