    Join the University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) as a Substitute Teacher and make a difference in our vibrant preschool program. You'll be instrumental in delivering a developmentally appropriate curriculum, while also assisting in the mentoring of UMF practicum, intern, and work-study students. This position offers a unique opportunity to interact closely with children, families, and UMF faculty, contributing to a rich educational experience for all.

    Essential Duties

    + Protects the safety of all children in the center and closely monitors their well-being.

    + Communicates and interacts with children during caretaking routines and free engagement time.

    + Manages the classroom effectively to encourage student participation, minimize distractions, and maintain a positive learning environment.

    + Exhibits sensitive and responsive caregiving, reading and responding to children’s cues and needs, and facilitating independence and the development of self-help skills when appropriate.

    + Exhibits behavior management consistent with Sweatt-Winter philosophy, including recognizing and identifying difficult feelings, redirection, setting up the environment to minimize stress and conflict, and positively reinforcing children while engaging positively with others.

    + Interacts with children during play activities both indoors and on the playground.

    + Treats parents and children with dignity and respect, recognizing the cultural and socioeconomic diversity of the population.

    + Adapts teaching methods to fit the needs of each student.

    Required Qualifications

    + A high school diploma or the equivalent

    + At least one year of experience in Early Childhood Education or a related field

    + The ability to work well with children and families

    + Current CPR/First Aid certification (or completion within the first 30 days)

    + Successful completion of DHHS fingerprinting and background check

    + Completion of training required by State of Maine Licensing

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education or related field

    + One (1) to three (3) years of preschool teaching experience

    + Experience mentoring pre-service teachers

    + Post-graduate teaching experience
