**Position:** Full-Time Histotechnician/Histotechnologist

**Department:** Histology Lab

**Location:** UPMC Passavant

**Shifts:** Monday to Friday 3AM – 11AM (no weekends or holidays required!)

Histotechnician salary range: **$19.67 - $31.19/hr**

Histotechnologist salary range: **$22.17 - $35.51/hr**

**Sign-On Bonus** of **$12,000 - $15,000** with a 2-year commitment based on level of experience!

Responsibilities:

+ Demonstrate complete knowledge of CoPath related to Histology workflow.

+ Process and prepare various types of tissue samples using a variety of techniques in a clinical laboratory.

+ Comply with all UPMC and departmental policies, procedures and work practices.

+ Demonstrates progression of skills towards working independently in an advanced staining area.

+ Perform ancillary or miscellaneous tasks such as filing, cleaning, stocking supplies.

+ Perform QC checks at each phase of processing/ staining

+ Process and prepare surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for embedding, cutting, staining and coverslipping. Embed and cut specialized tissue based on location including minute biopsy protocols.

+ Supports academic mission of department.

+ Ensures all tissues are embedded and cut according to department specific protocols with proper orientation and complete sections including no folds, chatter, artifacts or floaters.

+ Accurately prepares slides for microtomy using the barcode label in order to maintain correct patient identification throughout the process.

+ Maintain instruments following quality control specifications and daily maintenance protocols.

Histotechnician Requirements:

• High school diploma

• Successful completion of a **NAACLS-accredited Histotechnician (HT) program** within the last 5 years

• OR an **Associate’s degree** or at least **60 semester hours** from a regionally accredited college/university, including a combination of **12 semester hours in biology and chemistry**

• 1 year of clinical laboratory experience post-training preferred

• Licensure:

• HT (ASCP) required within 18 months of hire

• Act 34 with renewal

Histotechnologist Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (or 45 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry

• Successful completion of a NAACLS-accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnology program within the last 5 years

• OR 1 year of full-time acceptable experience in a histopathology laboratory within the last 10 years

• Lab must be located in the U.S., Canada, or a CAP/The Joint Commission (JCAHO)/AABB-accredited facility

• Experience must be under the supervision of a board-certified pathologist (Anatomic Pathology) or a board-certified medical scientist

• 1 year of full-time experience in a histology laboratory preferred

• Licensure:

• HTL (ASCP) required within 1 year of hire

• Act 34 with renewal
