JOB DESCRIPTION
The Prevention Specialist works under the direction of the Director of Student Wellness Services and assists in all matters pertaining to the development and implementation of a consistent prevention-based tier-I program and procedures across the district. The Prevention Specialist will provide information and professional development to school site teams and ensuring that prevention components are established in the district. The Prevention Specialist also coordinates with School Based Mental Health partnerships, oversees school climate survey data, and leads the district’s mental health screening nights. This position also provides oversight, coordination, and support for the Canyons Family Center.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
+ Work with CSD schools to ensure that effective Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports and Botvin Lifeskills are fully implemented.
+ Coordinate use of student at-risk behavioral data including the district student information system and data-dashboard.
+ Serve as a member of the CSD Crisis Team.
+ Serve as a liaison between CSD, other local districts, universities, agencies and the Utah State Board of Education, as assigned to coordinate prevention and intervention services.
+ Compile, synthesize, interpret, and display aggregate and disaggregate data sets.
+ Communicate consistently and courteously with CSD stakeholders, including parents.
+ Coordinate and develop mental health screening nights throughout the CSD school communities for students and parents.
+ Provide professional development to Canyons’ educators, wellness personnel, and administrators on topics related to prevention and intervention strategies for students.
+ Coordinate the Student Health and At Risk Prevention (SHARP) Survey with secondary schools and School Culture and Climate Survey.
+ Write district grant proposals (i.e., Prevention Block, SBMHQ grant, etc.) to USBE and other agencies and coordinate and oversee other current grant based programs within Student Wellness Services.
+ Coordinate district school-based mental health support partnerships (i.e., Project Connection, Hopeful Beginnings, Odyssey House, and Multicultural Counseling Center – MCC).
+ Coordinate, manage, and provide oversight to the Canyons Family Center (student intakes, counseling, and parenting classes) and be a liaison with all CFC contributing wellness staff members.
During times of state or district emergency, all employees may be required to perform additional duties that are not required on a normal basis in support of educational and operational priorities. e.g. Performs general cleaning and sanitizing of work areas, provides remote assistance to students and staff, and any other reasonable duty as needed.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
+ Incumbent must be fingerprinted and clear a criminal backgrounds check.•
+ Master’s degree in school counseling, social work, school psychology or related field.
+ Exceptional communication skills both verbal and written.•
+ Demonstrated skill in teaching and facilitating adult learners.•
+ Willingness to continually learn new information and skill related to student social and emotional development.•
+ Ability to take initiative, work efficiently and effectively with little oversight, and complete assignments on-time•
+ Demonstrated proficiency in the use of technology and instructional media tools.•
+ Experience working with at-risk students.•
+ Demonstrated counseling skills working with school age students.
+ Ability to build and sustain positive relationships with school-based personnel, students, and parents.•
+ Ability to keep sensitive information confidential.
+ Ability to collaborate effectively.
NOTE: The Administration reserves the right to require specific training for this position. However, depending upon the type and quality of prior work experience and availability of formal training programs, some exchanges can be made between training and experience.
