Job Description
The Iowa Department of Transportation’s Mission isMaking Lives Better Through Transportation. Location : Ames, Iowa
Shift Requirements : 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. | Occasional travel across the State of Iowa | Some overnight travel may be required.
The Office of Construction and Materials is seeking aMaterials Technician 5to lead the Metals and General Test Lab sections. In this role, you will oversee operations by assigning tasks and ensuring strict adherence to technical testing procedures. Your leadership will be vital in maintaining an efficient and effective laboratory environment, where you will guide team members in their daily responsibilities while promoting a culture of collaboration, quality, and safety.
Our best candidate will be a people leader who possesses the skills to comprehend a variety of written materials, including technical documents and specifications. It is crucial to ensure the accuracy of test reports and maintain them in an organized filing system.
Other duties will include, but are not limited to:
+ Coordinating testing activities and prioritizing the operation of equipment within both sections, ensuring that all processes run smoothly.
+ Managing computer-controlled testing equipment, which entails scheduling maintenance, performing calibrations, and overseeing the repair or replacement of any malfunctioning or outdated machines.
+ Demonstrating testing procedures for the accreditation of the Iowa DOT Materials Laboratory.
+ Training employees in a way that allows for the seamless interchange of work assignments, testing procedures, duties, and responsibilities across different sections.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
The equivalent of seven years of full time experience in the sampling, testing, or inspection of materials used in highway construction and maintenance projects;
OR
an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting one year (30 semester hours or equivalent) of college, university, or technical school course work with an emphasis in engineering, metallurgy, geology, or chemistry for each year of the required experience;
OR
employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes the equivalent of eighteen months of full time experience as a Materials Technician 4 or Materials Fabrication Inspector 2 or the equivalent of thirty months of full time experience as a Materials Technician 3.

Additional Qualification Requirements
+ Designated positions are required to have and maintain a minimum of a valid Class C Non-Commercial Operator's License.
+ Prior to starting employment, all persons are required to have a post offer pre-employment physical verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described.
+ Positions require certification for testing materials and operating specialized equipment as required by the Iowa Department of Transportation's Technical Training and Certification Program for Highway Materials and Construction; and/or other certifications as required.
+ Employees in designated positions must be able to travel and may be required to stay away from home overnight during assignments.
