This position will be part of the Enterprise Services team, which delivers a full suite of services to state agencies, boards, councils, and commissions, and many central services to local government partners.
The Communications Director leads a dynamic team responsible for shaping and delivering Minnesota IT Services’ (MNIT) internal and external communications. In this role, you will guide agency-wide communications and marketing strategies that promote transparency, strengthen public trust, and highlight the value of MNIT’s work across state government.
You’ll oversee strategic communications, public relations, media engagement, and outreach efforts that support MNIT’s mission and priorities. You’ll also lead crisis communication responses, manage agency messaging, and ensure consistent, high-quality communications that reach diverse audiences.
This role provides leadership to the Communications Department, managing workloads, priorities, and deliverables for a variety of communications programs across MNIT’s divisions.
As the agency’s primary spokesperson and liaison to the Governor’s Office, you’ll play a key role on MNIT’s senior leadership team, helping shape how the agency communicates with Minnesotans, media, partners, and state employees.
This position requires an employee to be onsite at 600 N. Robert St. Saint Paul, Minnesota 55146 at least 50% of the time, with some opportunity to perform work from a telework location.

Minimum Qualifications

Position requires a minimum of four (4) years of professional experience in strategic communications and public relations.
Experience must include:
+ Lead work, supervisory, or managerial experience in strategic communications and public relations.
+ Experience developing and executing strategic communication plans across diverse teams or stakeholders.
+ Experience creating and delivering content across digital platforms, including evaluating performance metrics and user engagement.
+ Experience planning and delivering external communications for public engagement efforts, including speechwriting, presentation development, and preparation for legislative or media-facing events.
+ Experience managing website content using a Content Management System (CMS) and serving as a media liaison during high-stakes or crisis response scenarios.
+ Ability to deliver effective verbal or written messages that facilitate a mutual understanding on both parties.
+ Customer service skills that include active listening, empathy, and problem-solving.
A bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing or a related field can substitute for one (1) year of experience.
Preferred Qualifications
+ Master's degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field.
+ Five (5) or more years of progressively responsible experience in communications, including public relations, media strategy, or stakeholder engagement.
+ Experience working within government, public-sector organizations, or regulated environments.
+ Familiarity or demonstrated interest in information technology, digital services, or complex technical subject matter.
+ Understanding of MNIT's mission, services, and strategic priorities, especially in a technology-enabled service context.
+ Demonstrated success serving as a trusted strategic advisor to senior leadership.
