    Job Summary

    The University of Michigan Health System is home to multiple Collaborative Quality Initiatives (CQIs) coordinating centers which seek to address some of the most common, complex, and costly areas of surgical and medical care. With funding from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM), the CQIs work collaboratively with health care providers throughout Michigan to collect data to a centralized registry. The data are analyzed and shared to identify processes that lead to improved delivery of care and outcomes, and guide quality improvement interventions.

     

    The Obstetric Initiative (https://www.obstetricsinitiative.org/) (OBI) is a Collaborative Quality Initiative (CQI) statewide quality improvement project working with approximately 70 Michigan maternity hospitals. OBI is working to address variation in obstetric care with a primary focus on promoting vaginal birth and safely lowering the cesarean delivery rate among low-risk patients. Additional initiatives include promoting birth equity, safe opioid prescribing and reducing maternal morbidity. We are currently seeking a dynamic and motivated self-starter to join our team in the role of Quality & Outreach Coordinator.

    Responsibilities*

    As the OBI Quality & Outreach Coordinator, you will play a critical role in supporting and engaging OBI physicians, nurses, and other multidisciplinary team members with strategies to improve inpatient maternity care quality and promote optimal maternity care experiences for Michigan families. In collaboration with the OBI leadership team, you will be the primary point of contact for participating maternity hospitals with relation to quality improvement, consistent data collection, education, and project support. Specific responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:

    Outreach & Engagement

    + Develop and maintain relationships across participating maternity hospitals while also directly managing and visiting a portfolio of hospitals for QI support and engagement outreach.

    + Provide excellent customer service to Clinical Data Abstractors (CDAs) and other Champion Team members for each participating sites when providing educational materials and responding to questions regarding OBI initiatives.

    + Participate in in-person site visits, virtual site visits, and coaching calls to support individual hospital teams in assigned portfolio across Michigan with quality improvement activities and goals.

    + Draft educational materials, presentations, quality improvement tools and manuals for OBI related activities.

    + Possess and apply a broad knowledge of data measurement, analysis, interpretation, and performance improvement to support OBI Hospitals.

    + Collaborate with the OBI Coordinating Center Teams and OBI participating hospitals to identify opportunities for improvement at the site level and across the collaborative.

    + Identify barriers preventing participants from functioning at high levels of performance, and work with teams to develop strategies to improve performance.

    + Coordinate hospital-based multidisciplinary team communications; responding to questions regarding data collection and project support.

    + Facilitate workgroup sessions to provide participating hospital teams an opportunity to collaborate and learn from one another's successes and challenges.

    Data Management and Quality Assurance

    + Provide external support to collaborative hospitals for quality improvement initiatives, including provision of data reports, relevant literature, educational programming, access to experts, and other resources.

    + Facilitate adherence to performance metrics, guiding participation in quality improvement projects.

    + Evaluating the performance of program participants through audits and ongoing communication of program updates and other items of relevance to the programs.

    + Suggest options for improving quality, identify potential problems, as well and recommend and implement solutions.

    + Collaborate with OBI team to ensure that data elements support Quality Improvement Initiative metrics, Pay for Performance initiatives, and develop strategies to improve performance.

    + Assist with maintaining the OBI data collection manual, user's guides, and training modules/presentations to ensure consistent data collection across OBI participating hospitals.

    + Assist in OBI Workstation (data registry) function testing, support, and improvement opportunities.

    + Support educational efforts for topics related to reliable data capture for OBI Clinical Data Abstractors (CDA) meetings, Semiannual meetings, breakout sessions, and CDA check-in webinars as needed.

    + Use clinical knowledge and critical thinking skills to detect data validity and data collection concerns; collaborating with OBI team and CDAs to resolve issues as needed.

     

    Other Duties as Assigned

    Required Qualifications*

    + Bachelor's degree in business, nursing, public health, or other health related discipline.

    + Minimum of five years of experience in quality improvement, process improvement or performance measurement.

    + Background or experience leading process or quality improvement initiatives in a healthcare setting.

    + Prior experience facilitating and coaching teams in quality and process improvement efforts.

    + Demonstrated experience related to improving care processes and patient outcomes.

    + Ability to work independently and effectively manage multiple competing/shifting priorities and deadlines with minimal direct supervision.

    + Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral) and the ability to successfully work with multidisciplinary teams.

    + Strong expertise in public speaking and/or leading large group discussions and trainings.

    + Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

    + Ability to work cohesively in a team environment.

    + Ability to travel as needed within the state of Michigan.

    Desired Qualifications*

    + Experience in Labor and Delivery.

    + Master's degree in business, nursing, public health, or other health related discipline.

    + Experience with data collection in quality improvement or clinical research.

    + Prior experience working with the BCBSM Collaborative Quality Improvement initiatives (CQIs).

     

    Modes of Work

     

    Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment.     Additional Information

     

    The OBI team is a hybrid workforce. Remote work is supported and expected as appropriate within one's role. However, in person work is required a few times a month in Ann Arbor. Travel to OBI participating hospitals will be required for QI project support, coaching, and/or clinical data review.

     

    This is a two-year term-limited appointment. At the end of the stated term, your appointment will terminate, and will not be eligible for Reduction-in-Force (RIF) benefits. This term-limited appointment does not create a contract or guarantee of employment for any period of time as you will remain subject to disciplinary or other performance measures, up to and including termination, at the will of the University in accordance with existing University policy and standards for employee performance and conduct.

     

    Background Screening

     

    Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
