The Research Intern will contribute to active research projects under the supervision of senior investigators and research staff. Key responsibilities may include conducting basic science research including cell culture, histology, spectroscopy, cell sequencing etc, literature reviews, collecting and analyzing data, assisting with the preparation of research manuscripts, reports, or presentations, and participating in lab or team meetings. The intern may also be involved in organizing research materials, maintaining project documentation, and supporting other project-related activities as needed. This role is intended to provide recent graduates with hands-on experience in a research setting, fostering the development of skills and knowledge that will support future academic or professional pursuits in the sciences or related fields.
*LEARNING OBJECTIVES*
Develop Proficiency in Research Methodology and Statistical Analysis in a Laboratory Setting
1. Gain hands-on experience in basic science techniques including cell culture, histology, spectroscopy, cell sequencing etc under the guidance of attending physicians and research mentors.
2. Learn to apply basic and intermediate statistical methods to analyze clinical data, with support from faculty and biostatisticians.
3. Participate in research design discussions, including formulating hypotheses, identifying relevant variables, and developing data collection protocols relevant to the research studies.
Contribute Meaningfully to Basic Science Research and Enhance Ability to Conduct Academic Research
1. Actively engage in ongoing basic science research studies within the department of plastic and reconstructive surgery by contributing to literature reviews, data abstraction, manuscript writing, and abstract preparation, as appropriate.
2. Attend departmental research meetings, and other departmental educational activities to enhance scientific communication and academic writing skills.
3. Collaborate with research mentors on the preparation of research posters and oral presentations for submission to national or international academic conferences, as appropriate.
Cultivate Professionalism, Team Collaboration, and Reflective Practice
1. Participate in regular mentoring sessions to review progress, receive feedback, and set goals for continued growth throughout the internship.
2. Work as an integral part of a multidisciplinary research team, practicing effective communication, mutual respect, and collaborative problem-solving.
3. Engage in self-assessment and structured reflection exercises to identify strengths, areas for improvement, and strategies for personal and professional development in academic medicine.
*ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS*
Applicant must hold a bachelor's or master's degree; Degree must have been obtained recently (within one year)
Applicant must have previous research experience.
