Salary Range: $75,000-$100,000
Contract Length: 12- month
Immediate Supervisor: Superintendent/Chief of Staff
Basic Function: The Director of Communications is charged with improving South Bend Schools brand and digital presence. Director of Communications is responsible for setting the overall District Communication Strategy, the planning and management of website content (student/alumni/teacher profiles, curricular innovation, videos, etc.) social media platforms, media pitching/story placement and video storytelling. This position supervises other department content producers, managing the timely production and distribution of content. This position will support the department’s priorities and strategic storytelling to all of the SBCSC’s stakeholders, including students, parents, alumni, school leadership, news media, teachers, broader corporation employees, general public, and community partners. This person works to ensure coordinated and strategic messaging for the Superintendent, Cabinet, and Board members. The Director of Communications is responsible for overseeing all of the Communication Department.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
+ Establish a mission and vision for the communication team including leadership, direction, and collaboration of the team.
+ Evaluate effectiveness of current communications and public relations initiatives while developing strategies that will increase visibility with target markets to advance South Bend Schools mission.
+ Maintain a vibrant presence for the District's various social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.) through effective use of photos, videos, and written posts.
+ Cultivate positive relationships with local/regional/state/national media.
+ Manage communication, video messaging, and dialers for the Superintendent, Board Chair, and other Cabinet members as needed.
+ Create presentations for the Superintendent, Board, and other SBCSC leadership.
+ Support the district in enhancing community-wide relationships that elevate the profile and perception of SBCSC.
+ Assist with monthly reports to the Board on media activity and recognitions.
+ Implement crisis communications strategies as required, including night and weekend communication and messaging as required.
+ Take initiative in planning and executing communication tools.
+ Create and drive the communications department editorial calendar based around key events throughout the school year and summer.
+ Work to develop standardized crisis messaging for school leadership (student with weapon, etc.) to ensure consistent messaging to parents and students.
+ Coordinate inclement weather team and relevant communication in regard to weather conditions and events.
+ Manage District and Board Calendars.
+ Manage communications and logistics collaboratively for major events: Teacher of the Year , Graduations , Celebrations of Excellence, etc..
+ Serve as District Spokesperson.
+ Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
Qualifications: The incumbent must have a Bachelor’s degree or at least 3 years of work experience. Must have the ability to make independent decisions that reflect the culture and goals of the SBCSC; ability to work collaboratively with all other units, including school employees; excellent written and oral communication skills; excellent follow-through and ability to meet deadlines. Strong organizational capabilities; ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks. Strong video and social media experience. Spanish Language Proficiency Preferred.
Physical Demands:
Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other technologies and office equipment, sitting, standing and walking for extended periods of time; kneeling; bending at the waist; lifting; pushing; pulling and carrying equipment, supplies and materials weighing up to 25 pounds; repetitive hand movement and fine coordination to use a computer keyboard; emotional stability to work effectively under pressure and to keep all aspects of the job under control; hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone; seeing to read; prepare and assure the accuracy of documents.
