    What Success Looks Like In This Job

     

    Adams County is seeking a highly skilled candidate for our Fleet Technician Master Position within our Facilities & Fleet Management Department.This is a senior technical level position that performs a variety of highlyskilled tasks involved in the repair and maintenance of a variety of Fleet vehicles and equipment, including light construction and other power-driven equipment. The successful candidate will also act as a mentor and provide training to peers.

     

    Examples of Duties for Success

     

    + Exercise technical and functional assistance to peer group.

    + Inspect, diagnose, locate and repair mechanical problemson county vehicles and equipment.

    + Perform minor and major overhauls of equipment, engines, and other major drive train components.

    + Diagnose, maintain, and repair electrical system components, ignition systems, computer controls, electronic controls, microprocessors, alternators, high voltage power generators, starters, and batteries.

    + Diagnose and repair chassis, steering assemblies, transmissions, rear end assemblies, and other complex mechanical components.

    + Diagnose and repair front and rear drive axles, drive train components, belts, gears, chain drives, and propeller shafts.

    + Diagnose and repair air conditioning systems.

    + Diagnose and repair fuel injection systems in diesel orgasoline applications.

    + Repair and replace tires; check and adjust vehicle alignment.

    + Replace repair, engines, transmissions, differentials, and clutches.

    + Repair and replace components such asstarters, alternators, relays, lights, switches, and high voltage light systems.

    + Repair, adjust, and replace brake systems including wheel cylinders, master cylinders, disk pads, machine drums and rotors, hydraulic.

    + Repair and maintain sanders, plows, and related snow removal equipment and systems.

    + Install public safety equipment on county vehicles including light bars, insignias and numbers, radios, and antennas.

    + Weld, fabricate, and assemble parts and equipment for county vehicles and equipment; fabricate, modify, and repair body and chassis parts.

    + Weld, braze, solder, and cut steel, stainless steel, and aluminum by torch, electric arc, mig-welder, and plasma cutter; manufacture components to improve the operation of equipment.

    + Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on vehicles and equipment.

    + Perform daily and annual vehicle safety inspections; perform necessary repairs, to after-treatment systems and components

    + Maintain cleanliness of work area and tools; ensure compliance with established safety procedures.

    + Assist in the training of county staff in the operation of vehicles and equipment.

    + Maintain and repair shop equipment including hoists, grinders, welders, compressors, steam cleaners, and presses.

    + Assist in the purchasing of maintenance parts and materials.

    + Maintain work, time, and material records, using the automated shop management system.

    + Assist other technicians in the performance of mechanical repairs as required.

    + Respond to work during snowstorms as required.

    + Respond to service calls.

    + Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

    Heavy Equipment Specific Duties:

    + Diagnose, maintain, repair, and recondition hydraulic systems and high-pressure water systems, including pumps, valves, rams, hoses, and motors.

    + Diagnose, maintain, and repair high-pressure air systems, including rebuilding of pumps, valves, cylinders, and hoses.

    + Diagnose and repair tracks and rollers on heavy earth-moving equipment.

    + Diagnose and repair conveyors and related equipment.

    + Repair, inspect, adjust and replace air drum and disk brake components including, slack adjusters, s-cams, air calipers, air valves and abs components.

    + Perform heavy vehicle emission inspections.

    + Engage in procedures of preventive maintenance related to heavy and light construction equipment

     

    Qualifications for Success

     

    + Ability to mentor Fleet Technicians I and II.

    + Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision.

    + Participates in developing improvements in processes and procedures.

    + Ability to utilize all tools, equipment, and procedures used in the overhaul, repair, and adjustment of gas or diesel powered equipment.

    + Knowledge and understanding to apply principles and procedures of hydraulic systems, high-pressure air systems, and high-pressure water systems.

    + Knowledge and understanding of the operation and repair characteristics of a wide variety of automotive, light, and heavy equipment used in the county.

    + Knowledge and understanding of the operation and care of internal combustion engines.

    + Knowledge and understanding of hydraulic systems and components.

    + Ability to diagnose and repair electrical/electronic system failures.

    + Ability to utilize the methods, materials, equipment, and tools for welding and fabrication work.

    + Ability to learn and maintain knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.

    + Ability to acknowledge operational hazards and apply standard safety practices necessary in the area of assigned work.

    + Ability to operate automobiles and heavy equipment safely, implementing safe driving principles and practice.

    + Ability to operate office equipment, including computer equipment and associated software programs.

    + Ability to operate technical diagnostic equipment and the full range of equipment necessary to perform assigned duties.

    + Ability and knowledge to perform journey-level equipment mechanical work including the diagnosing, troubleshooting, fabricating, and repairing of vehicles and equipment.

    + Ability to determine mechanical repair needs and estimate time of repairs.

    + Ability to maintain a variety of shop and repair records, including the Faster Fleet Management program.

    + Ability to read and understand various manuals and schematics.

    + Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.

    + Must provide own tools.

    + Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

    + Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

     

    More Qualifications for Success

    Experience:

    + Eight (8) years of journey-level experience performing minor and major repairs to vehicles and equipment.

    OR

    + Five (5) years of journey-level experience performing minor and major repairs to vehicles and equipment and graduation from an automotive or heavy equipment technical training program.

    Education & Training:

    + High school diploma or GED equivalent.

    + Graduate from automotive or heavy equipment technical training is preferred and may substitute 3 years’ required experience.

    License and/or Certification:

    + Must have valid Colorado Driver’s License with no restrictions.

    + Possession of, or the ability to obtain within 1 year of hire, a valid Colorado commercial driver's license, class "B".

    + Must obtain and maintain at least Eight(8) of the nine (9) A1 – A8 required ASE certifications in the following areas, within eighteen (18) months of hire:

    + A1 – Engine Repair

    + A2 – Automatic Transmission/Transaxle

    + A3 – Manual Drive, Train, & Axles

    + A4 – Suspension & Steering

    + A5 – Brakes

    + A6 – Electrical/Electronic Systems

    + A7 – Heating & Air Conditioning

    + A8 – Engine Performance

    + Must also obtain and maintain at least seven (7) of the eight (8) T1 – T8 required ASE certifications in the following areas of heavy Equipment, within eighteen (18) months of hire:

    + T2 – Diesel Engines

    + T3 – Drive Train

    + T4 – Brakes

    + T5 – Suspension & Steering

    + T6 – Electrical/ Electronic Systems

    + T7 – Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC)

    + T8 – Preventive Maintenance Inspection

    + Obtaining or possessing ASE Master Certification in either Automotive or Medium and Heavy Truckis required within eighteen (18) months of hire.

    + Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a diesel emissions license required within one (1)year of hire.

     

    Background Check: Must pass a criminal background check.

    Other:

    + Adams County is required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations to conduct pre-employment drug screens, background checks and motor vehicle record checks. Successful candidates must pass all the above, including a DOT physical and criminal background check.

    + Availability for shift work, on-call, and stand-by call is required.

    This position requires a moderate level of physical endurance including the ability to:

    + Stand for extended periods of time

    + Ability to lift up to 75 pounds unassisted

    + Ability to push and/or pull heavy objects in excess of 100 pounds

    + Ability to: bend, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach overhead, twist, crawl
