    Job Summary

    The College of Forestry’s Department of Forest Engineering, Resources and Management is seeking a Manager of the Cooperative Chemical Analytical Laboratory. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 12-month, professional faculty position.

     

    The OSU College of Forestry’s Cooperative Chemical Analytical Laboratory ( CCAL ) is a premier trace-level analytical laboratory with a 40-year legacy of excellence in environmental freshwater analysis and is key to long-term data analysis for numerous projects within the university and for collaborating agencies. For example, CCAL has provided defensible long term water quality data for the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest LTER site over the last 40-yrs. CCAL is a self-sustaining (through use and analysis fees) production laboratory housed within the College of Forestry at Oregon State University. The CCAL laboratory manager is responsible for running analyses and for managing business processes including daily operations, budget, database, compliance and control, customer service and supervision of laboratory personnel.

     

    This position offers the unique opportunity to combine high-level laboratory management with hands-on analytical services. The manager oversees all business operations, including engaging with clients and partners, while also serving as senior chemist, allowing them to directly contribute to the analytical excellence that has made CCAL an essential resource for researchers at Oregon State University and collaborating organizations.

     

    The work provides critical data for environmental monitoring programs, scientific publications, and watershed management decisions across multiple agencies and locations. With access to specialized analytical equipment and a collaborative team environment, the manager enhances and maintains CCAL’s reputation for exceptional accuracy and precision while advancing the laboratory’s capabilities through innovative method development and quality assurance procedures.

    Key Responsibilities

    45% — Laboratory Operations and Management

     

    + Perform chemical analyses, analyze and interpret results to ensure high quality, precise and accurate analytical results using established standard operations procedures and quality control protocols.

    + Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair instrumentation with an understanding of chemical processes underlying analytical results

    + Research and develop new analytical methods and standard operating procedures, as appropriate, to improve performance, increase efficiency and reduce waste

    + Maintain comprehensive knowledge of safety regulations and implement appropriate protocols including compliance with Environmental Health and Safety protocols in handling hazardous materials

     

    40% — Administrative and Financial Management

     

    + Manage fiscal accounting operations by direction, coordination and implementation of short- and long-range fiscal policies, including fee book revisions in accordance with university procedures and polices

    + Monitor operational costs and review fee rates annually with the college budget director and supervising department to ensure rates fully recover unit costs and maintain the laboratory’s self-sustaining business model.

    + Oversee preparation and monitoring of operating budgets, and handle procurement and purchasing responsibilities

    + Track laboratory services and submit timely results reports to billing requests following OSU processes to ensure accurate revenue collection.

    + Manage a database for sample tracking and results compilation, to ensure data integrity

    + Maintain and update content on CCAL website

    + Represent CCAL in professional contexts and maintain relationships with collaborating organizations and clients

    + Report on business, finances, performance, and laboratory protocols through internal and external reports

     

    15% — Personnel and Team Management

     

    + Supervise employees by advising and mentoring, evaluating performance, and resolving complaints

    + Oversee planning, assignment, and reviewing the work of laboratory personnel

    + Oversee training on laboratory techniques, equipment, and safety procedures

    + Foster a safe, inclusive and collaborative work environment

    What You Will Need

    + Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biological Engineering, Geochemistry, or a related field.

    + A minimum of 3 years of work experience as a senior chemist in an analytical chemistry lab.

    + Experience in laboratory instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair.

    + Experience following Standard Operating Procedures and quality assurance/quality control practices in a chemistry lab.

    + Knowledge of applicable environmental regulations and laboratory safety protocols.

    + Experience developing or revising analytical methods and Standard Operating Procedures.

    + Proficiency in results analyses and interpretation as it relates to protocols and reporting lab results.

    + Experience in fiscal accounting operations, including billing and operating budgets.

    + Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

    + Experience maintaining and fostering professional relationships and collaborations.

    + Record of actively contributing to a safe, inclusive and collaborative work environment.

     

    This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

    What We Would Like You to Have

    + Advanced degree in chemistry or related field.

    + Experience performing trace water analyses in a laboratory setting.

    + A minimum 2 years experience preparing and monitoring operating budgets for production laboratory operations

    + Experience managing/training staff or personnel in a laboratory setting.

    + Experience with EPA surface water chemistry criteria and environmental monitoring programs or external proficiency testing programs (e.g., USGS Standard Reference Water Survey Program).

    + Experience optimizing analytical or business workflows through the adoption of modern technologies and data-driven systems.

    Working Conditions / Work Schedule

    General chemical laboratory conditions. Work includes handling hazardous chemicals and procurement, storage and use of chemicals. Includes office work. Regular shift hours and off-hours work. Includes lifting and carrying heavy items such as water samples and supplies, moving laboratory equipment. Requires extended periods of standing.
