About this Job:
The Property Litigation Unit of the Legal Section assists the Real Estate Section in acquiring rights of way needed for highway projects, through expropriation. This Unit also handles encroachments, inverse condemnation lawsuits and other property disputes. The Paralegal 2's role is to provide assistance to the Attorney 3 by organizing files, making exhibits, assisting in trial preparation and at trial, in order that property cases may be brought to resolution.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of an approved Paralegal or Legal Assistant program approved by the American Bar Association (ABA), or at an accredited college or university; OR
Possession of a Certified Paralegal (CP) certification issued by the National Association of Legal Assistants, Inc.; OR
A Juris Doctorate.

Job Duties and Other Information
Job Duties:
+ Prepares Property Litigation Unit cases for court by drafting petitions and answering discovery.
+ Conducts legal research by searching, examining, and collecting authorities on points of law in connection with the preparation of cases for trial. Manage online access to parish Clerk of Court records. Manage access and training for all Westlaw products and egal software.
+ Incumbent shall serve as the Payment Processor for Public Records Requests and Damage Claims and is responsible for taking incoming calls from customers that desire to pay for record copies via credit card, or pay balances owed to the agency for damage to State Property. The employee also follows strict adherence to processes, which require daily report reconciliation, a complete understanding of multiple software programs needed to process payments, strong organization skills, customer service skills and the ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
+ Document production for litigation files; identifies all documents; coordinates final duplication and arranges final duplication.
+ Runs training reports for each Legal Section employee, reviews reports, and notifies the employees of any training deficiencies or upcoming required training. As necessary, keep each employee's supervisor informed of findings. Ensures that each employee complies with the annual training requirements mandated by the Compliance Program, EEO, Safety, Ethics training, LaGov, DOTD Management Development, and any other required courses based upon a respective employee's security level.
+ Gathers information and documents to respond to Public Records Requests.
+ Organizes litigation files; prepares trial notebooks(s) and other exhibits. Performs miscellaneous special projects, such as delivering legal documents as assigned.
+ Designated Safety Coordinator for Sections 47 and 01. Duties include: Monthly Safety Meeting, Monthly Office Inspection, Accident/Incident Investigation and Reporting, potential hazard reporting, checks driving records yearly and authorizing drivers.
Position-Specific Details:
Appointment Type: Probational, Promotional, or Job Appointment or Detail to Special Duty.
Career Progression: This position may be filled as a Paralegal 1 or 2. The level at which the vacancy is filled will be determined by the qualifications of the candidate selected.
Compensation: This position is eligible for premium pay of up to $2.00 per hour worked.
