About Us:
If you are passionate about the ability of American business to improve lives, solve problems, and strengthen society, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the place for you. As the world’s largest business organization, we believe in building a future that gives everyone the opportunity to pursue a better tomorrow. We make it our job today–and every day–to build the strongest relationships possible among the American people, business leaders, and elected officials in Washington, D.C., state capitals, and countries around the globe. For them and the businesses we represent, the U.S. Chamber is a trusted advocate and partner.
We are driven by the pursuit of innovation and partnership and hold ourselves to the highest standards. Our commitment to our members is matched only by our commitment to our employees. As part of our team, we will support your long-term career development while delivering relevant learning opportunities. We will empower you to lead, develop deep expertise, and find new approaches to solving the toughest challenges.
Position Overview:
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is seeking a Director, Southeast Asia. This person will be part of a team supporting U.S. business interests in, and increased trade and investment with, the 10 ASEAN countries, Australia, and New Zealand. This person will support the Southeast Asia (SEA) team’s programming, policy work, research, and member company engagement with these countries and will report to the vice president, Southeast Asia and Oceania.
This is not a 9-5 job. This is a career opportunity in which the successful candidate will develop a deep understanding of the key issues facing U.S. businesses in the region and expand their expertise in the region’s economics and politics while engaging companies, regional government officials in Washington, D.C., and abroad, U.S. Chamber colleagues, and other stakeholders.
You will be challenged and expected to quickly familiarize yourself with an array of challenges— policy, regulatory, or geoeconomic— faced by Chamber members. You will be expected to work effectively with those members and with Chamber colleagues to devise appropriate responses and advocacy strategies.
Responsibilities:
+ Monitor and report on economic policy developments in Southeast Asia in priority areas for Chamber member companies as well as U.S. policy toward the region.
+ This includes developments in trade, digital, financial services, energy, and other areas of economic policy across the region.
+ Develop and maintain relationships with member company executives; relevant U.S. government contacts (e.g., USTR, State Department, Commerce Department, HFAC, and SFR); and foreign embassies, foreign government departments, and agencies (e.g., ministries of trade, industry, and investment) across the region.
+ Oversee all aspects of planning, marketing, managing, and executing virtual and in-person events for the SEA team. This includes roundtable discussions with ambassadors and other government officials; visits by heads of state, regional Cabinet ministers, and other VIPs; business missions to the region; and conferences and symposia.
+ Book rooms and handle physical room arrangements, coordinate catering, manage AV requirements, draft and disseminate invitations, oversee RSVP lists, and perform other aspects of event management.
+ Draft talking points, remarks, speeches, and press materials.
+ On a daily basis, track political and economic news and developments across the region and developments pertaining to U.S. relations with those countries. Using that knowledge, draft a weekly newsletter and ad hoc updates as events warrant.
+ Contribute to Chamber blog posts.
+ Prepare opinion pieces for publication in the region.
+ Maintain familiarity and awareness of U.S. company activity in Southeast Asia, including that of Chamber members and prospective members.
+ Assist with the SEA team’s outreach and marketing to prospective member companies and undertake research to support that outreach.
+ In the spirit of the Chamber’s “Shared Purpose,” collaborate with other Chamber teams across the International Division and in functional areas (e.g., digital, health, energy, and infrastructure)
+ Respond to member requests for information and assistance.
+ Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:
+ Bachelor’s or master’s degree with 5-7 years’ relevant work experience.
+ Strong interest in and passion for Southeast Asia.
+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including editing and proofreading.
+ Strong self-starter, proactive, and able to anticipate needs and take initiative.
+ Ability to collaborate effectively with team members and meet deadlines.
+ Able to work independently, often with minimal oversight. Sound judgment, strong instincts, and a professional demeanor with the ability to interact effectively with senior executives and government officials.
+ Able to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously.
+ Outstanding customer service.
+ Excellent project management, organization, and attention to detail.
+ Occasional early morning /late evening hours in line with counterparts in Asia.
+ Flexibility to travel to Asia 2 to 3 times per year.
