    Department Summary

The Department of Landscape Architecture is an intrinsic component of the School of Architecture and

Environment in the College of Design. The UO’s Department of Landscape Architecture is the oldest landscape department west of the Mississippi. Evolving and growing for more than 100 years, our program's roots started in 1911. We are the only program in Oregon that has accredited MLA & BLA programs and a PhD. Our curriculum focuses on understanding landscapes across multiple scales. We partner with groups like designBridge, Urban Farm, and the local American Society of Landscape Architects chapter to focus on real-world projects that are carried through to completion. We focus on thoughtful design and real problem-solving, not flashy presentations and short-term trends. The strength of our curriculum is offering design studios and courses with depth and variety. Design problems arise from real needs in real places that affect real people.

The University of Oregon is the flagship institution of higher learning in Oregon and enrolls more than 20,000 undergraduate and 3,600 graduate students. The UO’s 295-acre campus features state-of-the-art facilities in an arboretum-like setting within the traditional homelands of the Kalapuya people. The UO is located in Eugene, a vibrant city of 168,000 within easy driving distance of the Pacific Coast, the Cascade Mountains, and Portland.

The School of Architecture & Environment at the University of Oregon acknowledges that professional schools of design and design pedagogy in North America have historically disproportionately excluded cultural perspectives outside of European and colonial traditions. The School of Architecture & Environment seeks to participate in remedying these exclusions by recruiting visiting faculty who will use teaching to expand their understanding of environmental, social, and spatial justice in design, who will engage communities within and outside of the institution in their research and teaching, and whose scholarship is enriched by their lived experience.

We particularly encourage applications from candidates who are interested in teaching on questions in productive landscapes at the intersections of gender, race, ethnicity, indigenousness, sexuality, and economic inequality and who are interested in teaching innovation design/research methods with a focus on landscape architecture design and construction studios. Studio methods might include but are not limited to traditional modes of scholarship, design, design research and creative practice; emerging technologies, design media, and fabrication; design and design/build; and community engagement, social practice, or critical spatial practice. Depending on interest and curricular need, design studios, subject area courses, and seminar courses could be in one or more of the following areas: productive landscapes, media & technology, and critical spatial practice.

To build our shared capacity to take intellectual risks and to advance knowledge, we are dedicated to building a community that fully includes students, designers, and scholars whose excellence depends on the breadth of their experiences and perspectives and who are committed to working in a multicultural environment. We encourage applications from historically marginalized and currently underrepresented communities including but not limited to women, ethnic and racial minorities, LGBTQIA+, veterans, and people with disabilities.
