POSITION DETAILS
The Office of K-16 Initiatives within Academic Affairs at The City University of New York (CUNY) creates innovative pathways for young New Yorkers to envision and achieve success, by engaging strategic partners in confronting systemic educational inequities. The Office of K-16 Initiatives is hiring an Associate Director of College and Career Access and Success to oversee the successful implementation of CUNY Explorers, a university-wide college and career awareness program, and GEAR UP, a federal program designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education.
The CUNY Explorers Program, working with the New York City Department of Education, ensures that 6th-10th grade students are exposed to a college-going culture through engaging and meaningful campus visit experiences and workshops. By supporting students to develop a college identity at a critical developmental age and providing a campus experience that promotes a college-going mindset, students and families internalize the message that college is a necessary and achievable goal. The campus visit is embedded in a broader set of student and parent activities, focused on planning for high school and college.
Reporting to the Assistant Dean of K-16 Initiatives, the Associate Director of College and Career Access and Success will manage multiple aspects of a comprehensive, campus-facing experience supporting college-awareness and academic identity development and will serve as the university's primary liaison, connecting statewide programs (i.e., grant recipients) with various CUNY programs that will help ensure that cohorts of students in high-poverty schools are prepared forand ready to succeed in college.
The Associate Director of College and Career Access and Success will:
•Develop and implement procedures to manage program strategy, goals, structures, policies, systems, participation targets, and budget and funding sources to ensure the long-term sustainability of programs.
•Meet with state stakeholders, engage in regular outreach to subgrantees, and manage various budgets and reports tied to the success of grants.
•Manage growth and strategy utilizing an existing feedback framework to identify best practices and areas for improvement in close collaboration with the University Assistant Dean, and other K16 leadership,
•Manage central and campus budgets, identifying areas of greatest funding need, including the management of the Gear Up seven-year federal and state grant.
•Oversee the professional development agenda for CUNY Explorers campus staff, including managing partnerships with outside training organizations.
•Manage communication, branding and messaging strategy, data collection and analysis, and program integrity; build unit-wide relationships and communication to support students' academic pathway into higher education.
•Manage registration websites for program visits at all CUNY Explorers campuses; support recruitment of NYCPS school partners to ensure CUNY Explorers is meeting participation targets.
•Collect and analyze data to identify strategic goals and priorities in order to ensure program metrics are met.
•Leverage CUNY Explorers, foster collaborative relationships between high schools and campuses to encourage college and career connections among students participating in FutureReadyNYC.
•Provide program updates and various reports to internal and external partners on key performance measurements.
•Supervise, manage, train, and evaluate one or more full and/or part time central office staff members, including interns.
•Travel: Represent the programs and the unit at key public events, meetings, and conferences; travel to various CUNY campuses, NYCPS middle and high schools.
•Other duties, as needed and assigned.
NOTES:
Until further notice, this position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule.
QUALIFICATIONS
MINIMUM
Bachelor’s degree and six years’ related experience required.
PREFERRED
- Six years of progressively responsible work experience managing an educational or social service program or initiative working with NYC public schools.
- Broad understanding of public secondary and higher education systems and commitment to promoting college access and success in post-secondary education.
- Experience with NYC public schools and students preferred.
- Detail-oriented and accurate with strong analytical, research, and evaluation skills.
- Strong interpersonal communication, writing, presentation, consultation, negotiation and group facilitation skills.
- Strong organizational and follow-through skills to devise and execute work plans, prioritize work, manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Proactive, flexible, and customer focused to work effectively, both independently and as a team member, in a fast-paced work environment with diverse members of the University community and external constituents.
- Proficiency with technology and use of academic, administrative, and financial programs, systems or databases, online survey systems, project management and social media tools.

- Represents management in meetings and activities related to department administration.
- Maintains archives, inventories, or collections of materials or records needed by the department.
- Works with fund-raising, marketing, technology, and other personnel to provide information and participate in Campus or University-wide initiatives.
- Collect information for, produce, and distribute department reports covering program, fiscal, and human resources issues
- Independently carries out unit activities such as approvals, student interactions, and participation in campus- or university-wide committees and projects.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
The salary range is **$73,227 - $79,188** commensurate with credentials, education, and experience.
CUNY is in the process of implementing salary schedule increases. Once implemented, salaries of eligible employees will be adjusted by 6.09% with additional increases of 3.25% effective 9/1/2025 and 3.5% effective 9/1/26, in accordance with the terms of the PSC-CUNY collective bargaining agreement.
