The Minnesota Veterans Home-Luverne is seeking an individual to join our team as a Benefits Specialist to assist Veterans and their families in conducting financial reviews to calculate costs and maximize benefits.
This position is responsible for:
+ Supporting the Admissions Coordinator and other staff in the efficient and accurate admission of interested Veterans and their eligible families by preparing, verifying, and analyzing all financial documentation necessary for the application to state and federal benefits.
+ Respond to inquiries received by telephone, personal contact, or correspondence in a timely manner and with correct information.
+ Assist, coordinate and facilitate aspects related to the state and federal benefits that would be available to residents and/or their representative in the MN Veterans Home including medical assistant, Medicare Part A, B, D, dental and optical benefits, specialty care and other Veterans related programs.
+ Ensure that all policies and procedures are followed with managing resident trust, maintenance collection and billings, and outstanding claims requiring attention.
_This position is designated as part-time. The work schedule will include 72 hours per two-week pay period. The position is initially eligible for a full employer contribution towards health and dental insurance benefits._

Minimum Qualifications
Two (2) years of office/administrative support or related experience* that includes determining benefits eligibility and/or providing healthcare business office support. ( ***NOTE** : An Associate Degree in Business Administration, Accounting, or related program may substitute for one year of experience. Completion of a diploma program in a finance or healthcare-related program may substitute for six months of experience.)
Applicants who meet the above qualification will be further assessed in the following areas:
+ Knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, federal Veterans Administration benefits, third party insurances and private pay to healthcare services sufficient to determine benefits eligibility.
+ Knowledge of data privacy and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability act (HIPAA) sufficient to maintain confidentiality and security of patient medical records and private health information.
+ Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively develop strong working relationships, conduct financial interviews to determine residents' and potential residents' benefits eligibility and maintenance fees, and effectively communicate these determinations
+ Analysis skills sufficient to review, evaluate, and organize financial information and make accurate benefit eligibility determinations.
+ Skills in using office software applications, such as Microsoft Office software.
Preferred Qualifications
+ Experience working in a skilled nursing or long-term care facility.
+ Experience completing financial assessments for medical services benefits such as medical assistance, maintenance fees, and patient responsibility.
+ Skills using an electronic health record system or benefit eligibility system, such as PointClickCare or AbilityEase, to update and maintain resident information and check insurance eligibility.
Additional Requirements
The selection process may include the following:
+ A Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) background study will be conducted on finalists for this position. Finalists must pass the DHS background check.
+ A Tuberculosis (Mantoux) screening (or chest x-ray) is required prior to employment.
+ Employment reference checks will be conducted on finalists. This may include a review of documentation related to job performance and contact with the applicant's former employer(s).
