    Job Duties and Other Information

    Job Duties:

    This position is in the Construction Section of the Department of Transportation and Development, District 04, Unit -214, and reports directly to the Engineering Technician 7.

     

    The incumbent is required to have specialized knowledge of the use of computers, calculators, rulers and measuring tapes, levels and testing equipment. The Engineering Technician verifies elevations and alignments of construction work. The Engineering Technician prepares work reports, estimate quantities and calculations and is responsible for the inspection and gathering samples of construction materials on an assigned construction project. The incumbent may perform routine inspection tasks, as well as checking construction work for progress on contract plans and specifications. The incumbent completes all paperwork necessary for sampling and testing and prepares sampling plans. The incumbent measures and performs more complicated computations and renders detailed sketches and prepares daily work diaries or field book entries. The incumbent becomes familiar with Department procedures, policies, standards and specifications as related to the processing of construction-related documents such as partial and final estimates, test reports and materials audits (2059); assists higher-level technicians in a Project Engineer's office engaged in these tasks.

     

    The incumbent is required to operate all equipment that is normal to an effective quality assurance function. Must be knowledgeable in the safe operation of passenger vehicles, as well as, other equipment operated by the Department and Contractors.

     

    This position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain a Louisiana Driver's license and attain required NDT Testing Certifications.

     

    The incumbent will participate in DOTD structured training programs and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks.

     

    The incumbent must be self-motivated, imaginative and able to perform duties with or without direct supervision. Should be knowledgeable enough to interpret and report unforeseen conditions as they may arise. Must be able to engage in professional technical communications and understand and follow chain-of-command processes.

    Job Duties & Responsibilities:

    75% Inspection/Area of Certification: Monitors construction signage for compliance with Departmental requirements. Inspects contractor construction procedures to ensure compliance with project specifications and quality assurance. Collects required samples and tests materials that are to be included in the project. Performs soil densification tests using nuclear density machine. Receives profile data and evaluates pavement surfaces to determine longitudinal surface acceptability. Takes all pertinent measurements including but not limited to length, width and depth verification. Calculates and enters quantities for project records. Complies and summarizes monthly contractor payments for review. Gathers field information for alterations or changes to the project. Prepares project diaries. Assists in maintaining good public relations with individuals affected by the construction activities. Performs on-the -job training in the principle areas of certification. Position Description SCS will keep this document for six (6) years. Monitors contractor compliance with EEO requirements. Writes haul tickets.

     

    10% Office Duties: Indexes. Labels and itemizes pay items in the project document records. Recapitulates project document records for final audit. Computes and validates project quantities. Obtains additional training as needed or required. Uses computer engineering applications as required by Departmental policy.

     

    5% Design Of projects: Collects field data including cross sections, draws field sketches and calculates quantities related to Standard Departmental Design practices.

     

    5% Associated Duties: Participates in activities that are necessary for the function of the Construction Office. Performs such duties as are required for the efficient operation of the Department and to protect the public interests.

     

    5% Special Duty: May be required to perform other duties as necessary including, but not limited to, emergency disaster support activities.

    Compensation:

    Engineering Technician 1 - The starting salary is $12.22/hourly with an additional $2.00 optional pay for every hour worked.

     

    Engineering Technician 2 - Starting salary is $14.00/hourly with an additional $2.00 optional pay for every hour worked.

     

    Engineering Technician 3 - Starting salary is $16.03/hourly with an additional $2.00 optional pay for every hour worked.

     

    Engineering Technician 4 - Starting salary is $18.35/hourly with an additional $2.00 optional pay for every hour worked.
