    Description

    Boehringer Ingelheim is currently seeking a Technologist, Senior Histology to join our Global Nonclinical Safety (NCS) & Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics department located at our Ridgefield, CT facility. This position performs all phases of routine and non-routine histological specimen preparation (including trimming, post-fixed organ weighing, embedding, microtomy, cryotomy, routine staining, coverslipping and labelling of prepared slides) as well as non-routine procedures (immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, special stains, etc.) according to study protocols. Performs all work efficiently and without supervision; functions as team leader by serving as the responsible histologist for NCS studies; supervises, provides technical guidance and training in mastered specialized techniques. Performs all work in a safe manner and in compliance with applicable regulations, especially Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).

    Duties & Responsibilities

    + Performs and supervises assigned histology procedures efficiently and without supervision to support NCS toxicology studies (including trimming, post-fixed organ weighing, embedding, microtomy, cryotomy, routine staining, coverslipping, labelling of prepared slides, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, etc.), by organizing own workload and that of teammates, following applicable SOPs, OIs and study protocols, producing high quality histologic specimens and completing all study activities on time.

    + Demonstrates mastery of specialized technical, scientific and/or administrative skills specific to histotechnology in a GLP environment (e.g., immunohistochemistry methods development and qualification, electron microscopy, confocal microscopy, image analysis, non-routine equipment maintenance, GLP equipment/systems validation, etc.); independently proposes and implements new technologies and/or process improvements

    + Operates and performs routine and non-routine maintenance on histology laboratory equipment (including balances, tissue processors, embedding units, microtomes, cryostat, automatic stainers, automatic coverslippers, automatic cassette and slide labelers, microscopes immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization autostainers, etc); demonstrates ability to trouble-shoot equipment without supervision.

    + Documents all work activities and maintains all assigned study records in compliance with GLP Regulations and in accordance with study protocols by following applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Operating Instructions (OI) regulations and company policies, using current forms and procedures, making all entries legibly, correctly and contemporaneously, and responding to all QA audit findings appropriately and in a timely fashion.

    + Demonstrates team leadership skills by mentoring, guiding, and providing technical expertise on specialized techniques to team members and training of junior staff

    + Demonstration of mastery of study histologist role by assuming responsibility for studies of higher size or complexity without supervision, including acquiring proficiency in and/or providing training and technical guidance to team members on any needed specialized techniques.

    + Maintains proficiency and training requirements.

     

    Compensation Data

     

    This position offers a base salary typically between $60,000.00 and $97,000.00 USD. The position may be eligible for a role specific variable or performance based bonus and or other compensation elements.     Requirements

    + American Society of Clinical Pathology Certified (or eligible) Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL); OR Associate's Degree from an accredited institution in a relevant scientific field with a minimum of eight (8) years experience in the conduct of histotechnology in a laboratory setting; OR high school diploma/GED with a minimum of 12 years experience in the conduct of histotechnology in a laboratory setting.

    + Successful completion of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS) accredited Histotechnician program may be substituted for an Associate's Degree

    + Demonstration of mastery of all aspects of histotechnology and hands-on proficiency and understanding of the conduct of at least one specialized specialized technical, scientific or administrative skill applicable to histotechnology performed in a GLP environment

    + Appropriate level of understanding of applicable regulations

    + Strong written and verbal communication skills; concise and accurate reporting of information

    + Demonstrated effectiveness in training and mentoring junior staff

    + Must be able to wear eyewear protection devices

    + Must be able to access laboratory equipment on bench tops or equivalent while using both hands to perform manual dexterity operations

    + Must be able to work in a seated position for an extended duration (~2h), with periodic breaks, while performing routine histotechnology functions (eg., tissue trimming, embedding, microtomy, etc.)

    Desired Skills, Experience and Abilities:

    + GLP laboratory environment experience

    + Laboratory management experience, qualification in Immunohistochemistry (QIHC) and / or ASCP Diplomate certification (DLM) highly desirable

    Eligibility Requirements

    Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.

     

    Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required)

     

    Must be 18 years of age or older
