    How will you make an impact in this role?

     

    The Global Risk & Compliance Organization (GRC) is an independent risk management function, led by the Chief Risk Officer, with the objective of ensuring that American Express operates in a safe, sound, and fully compliant manner with all applicable regulatory expectations. GRC creates and maintains the overall risk management framework, performs independent risk management assessments, and monitors applicable risks. GRC colleagues are passionate about our commitment to drive the Company’s goals of growth and progress by creating a culture of risk awareness and proactivity around regulatory matters.

     

    The Compliance Risk Management team facilitates and monitors the implementation of effective compliance risk management programs throughout the organization, and oversees risk ownership throughout business units, products, and processes. The objective of Compliance Risk Management Governance team is to develop, oversee and strengthen the organization’s Compliance Risk Management framework to ensure that governance structures, policies, and procedures are robust, effective, and align with regulatory requirements and best practices. The Compliance Committee Governance team ensures that compliance committees operate effectively, facilitate informed decision-making, and align with regulatory expectations and internal governance standards.

    Responsibilities:

    + Support the governance framework for compliance risk committees, ensuring alignment with regulatory expectations and internal policies.

    + Coordinate with stakeholders to collect updates, data, and reports for committee review.

    + Facilitate the escalation and resolution of compliance issues

    + Record and document committee meeting minutes and track action items, ensuring timely follow up and resolution.

    + Support the preparation and distribution of meeting invitations and materials.

    + Manage committee membership lists, including tracking attendance and membership changes.

    + Support meeting logistics, including coordinating schedules and ensuring availability of appropriate technology and resources.

    + Identify opportunities to streamline committee operations, reporting processes, and efficiencies.

    + Develop and implement best practices to enhance governance and operational effectiveness.

    + Foster strong relationships with Operational Risk Management and Enterprise Risk Management teams to ensure alignment of reporting activities

    + Assist in preparing materials for regulatory examinations and audits related to committee oversight.

    Skills:

    + Governance: Designs, oversees, or substantively participates in risk governance structures, supporting clear accountability and decision-making frameworks that align with organizational objectives and regulatory requirements.

    + Risk Escalation: Recognizes when a risk, issue or incident requires escalation to higher levels of management or external partners, facilitating timely decision-making and appropriate mitigation actions across the organization.

    + Professional skepticism: Displays a mindset of questioning assumptions, critically assessing information and seeking evidence to validate conclusions, so decisions are unbiased and well-founded.

    + Critical thinking: Analyzes complex situations, identifies patterns and draws meaningful conclusions to perform logical and well-structured evaluations.

    + Documentation: Develops and maintains practices and reporting to enable accurate and thorough records of risk management activities, supporting accountability and traceability throughout the risk management process.

    + Risk culture awareness and development: Influences and helps embed a strong risk-aware culture throughout the organization, encouraging proactive risk management behaviors at all levels.

    + Compliance risk management / program: Develops, implements, or assesses strategies, programs, policies, procedures and risk limits to manage the organization’s exposure to Compliance risk, so decisions align with the institution’s risk appetite, mitigate the risk of regulatory non-compliance and consumer harm, maintain alignment with peer practices, and meet legal, regulatory requirements and supervisory expectations and commitments.

    Qualifications:

    + Bachelor's degree and 3 years of experience in compliance, operational risk management, corporate governance, or regulatory affairs within a financial institution.

    + Strong knowledge of financial regulations, compliance risk frameworks, and corporate governance principles.

    + Experience preparing board and senior management reports and supporting governance forums.

    + Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

    + Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence leadership.

    + Experience in process governance, with a track record of developing and/or supporting robust decision-making processes that align with policies, regulatory frameworks, and / or operational standards.

    + Ability to break down a complex problem into components, solve them by potentially using data analysis, process knowledge and risk/control knowledge, and communicate data analysis, issues and control recommendations with transparency and integrity.

    + Excellent writing skills and ability to synthesize key messages for senior audiences.

    + Proven capacity to engage effectively with all levels of management and foster strong relationships.

    + Demonstrated experience and competency in the assessment of risks and controls.

    + Demonstrated integrity, innovation, teamwork, and excellence.

    + Excellent storytelling and visualization skills, with interest in working with data, interpreting results, analytic best practices and experience with data analytics tools and data visualization is a plus.

    + Self-starter and independent thinker with strong critical reasoning skills and the ability to navigate ambiguity with confidence.

    + Strong skills with Microsoft Office products including Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint.

    + Ability to effectively manage multiple and often conflicting priorities under tight timeframes.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Experience supporting risk exam management processes and/or project management a plus.

    + Familiarity with governance best practices in a multi-entity financial institution.

    + Relevant audit and compliance professional certification (Certified Regulatory Compliance Manager (CRCM), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) etc.)

    + Advanced degree in Accounting, or another related field.

    + Proficiency in Tableau, Microsoft Access, SQL, Power BI, Python, SAS, Hive and/or Spark is a plus.

    Qualifications

    Salary Range: $55,000.00 to $105,000.00 annually bonus benefits
