Position Summary
The current vacancies are in the Ramsey County Library department. The eligibility list created by these vacancies may be used to hire any and all other vacancies in the Ramsey County Library department for the next 3 months.
To provide assistance to library patrons in person and on the telephone; to staff the service desk, check out library materials, assist patrons with self-service checkout, process library card applications, collect fees and troubleshoot patron accounts; to shelve library materials such as books, periodicals, and media; to process returned library materials via an automated materials handling system or manual check-in, or to work in the Technical Services department of the library; to prepare new books and media for library circulation; to provide clerical support to the interlibrary loan function of the library; to unpack and coordinate interlibrary deliveries; and to perform related duties as assigned.
GOOD TO KNOW: Your work schedule will include some evenings and/or weekends. We are hiring for multiple openings, each with its own schedule. These will be shared with candidates at the interview stage.

Library Assistant in Public Services
+ Promote a diverse and culturally competent respectful workplace.
+ Staff the service desk, check in library materials, collect library fees and answer account-related questions, assist patrons with library card applications, update borrower records, and provide assistance in person or over the phone to patrons with general questions.
+ Check in and sort library materials manually and monitor the automated materials handling system .
+ Shelve library materials by arranging them in alphabetical order or according to Dewey Decimal number, as appropriate.
+ Check library shelves on a periodic basis to ensure that materials are being maintained in proper sequential or alphabetical order, and reorganize materials as needed.
+ Straighten bookshelves and common areas of the library to maintain orderliness and appeal of the facility.
+ Unpack and distribute library materials delivered from other Ramsey County Library and metro-area library locations.
+ Fill requests for library materials from other branches by pulling requested items from library shelves and preparing and packing materials to be sent to designated branches.
+ Set up program rooms for library events, including technology set up.
+ Provide technical support to patrons, including assistance with copying, scanning, printing, and internet usage.
+ Perform public contact duties such as receiving and routing phone calls; responding to complaints and inquiries by phone and in person; directing patrons to proper locations; scheduling appointments for patrons or staff; and assigning service requests for program units or staff in accordance with established guidelines.
+ Perform other related duties as assigned.
Library Assistant in Technical Services
+ Prepare new books and materials to be sent to library branches for circulation by affixing and identifying labels, covering book jackets, and preparing cases for audiovisual materials.
+ Unpack new library materials received from vendors.
+ Check the accuracy of labels before sending new and reprocessed materials to library branches.
+ File and retrieve interlibrary loan paperwork.
+ Check in library materials that are routed through the Technical Services department, including items returned at other metro-area libraries.
+ Process library card applications from other library systems for County residents.
(The work assigned to a position in this classification may not include all possible tasks in this description and does not limit the assignment of any additional tasks in this classification. Regular attendance according to the position’s management approved work schedule is required.)

Minimum Qualifications
Education: Sufficient to perform required duties .
Experience : None .
Certifications/Licensure: None.
Other: Must be 18 years of age.
Preferred : High school diploma or GED.
Exam/Screening Process Information
The examination process will consist of the following section with each section weighted as indicated:
+ Training and Experience Rating = 100%
The examination for Library Assistant will consist of a training and experience rating, comprised of the questions in the attached supplemental questionnaire. Not all applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will pass the training and experience rating. The rating on this supplemental questionnaire will depend on your answers to the questions – do not mark “see resume” or “see work history” as a response. Please answer all your questions clearly and completely. Failure to respond could affect your score and final rank on this examination.
Eligible List : The names of all applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and submit a properly completed application, shall be placed on the eligible list for an employment opportunity as a Library Assistant. Please answer all of the supplemental questions and attach the required documents. Failure to complete the application will affect your consideration for an interview. This list will be certified to the appointing authority which may use this list to conduct interviews to fill a vacancy . Candidates will remain on the list for 90 days or until hired, whichever occurs first. A notice will be sent to applicants at the time the eligible list is posted. The department may choose to interview any candidate on this eligible list.
Veteran's Preference: This is a classified position requiring an open, competitive selection process . Veteran's Preference points will be applied after a candidate passes the examination process. Applicants who are eligible for veteran's preference should update their veteran's DD214, and other supporting documents, and submit them as an attachment at the time of application.
Criminal Background Checks: All employment offers are conditioned upon the applicant passing a criminal background check. Convictions are not an automatic bar to employment. However, making false statements or withholding information will cause you to be barred from employment, or removed from employment.
E-Verify Participation: Ramsey County participates in the federal E-Verify program. This means that Ramsey County will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), with information from each new employee's Form I-9 to confirm work authorization. If the Government cannot confirm that you are authorized to work, Ramsey County is required to give you written instructions and an opportunity to contact DHS and/or the SSA before taking adverse action against you, including terminating your employment.
