Postdoctoral Researcher in Structural Climate Risk

SUNY Polytechnic Institute invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position to support a collaborative research effort with NCAR, funded by NIST. The project focuses on assessing the impact of evolving atmospheric conditions on freezing rain and its influence on structural ice load standards in the U.S. The successful candidate will work with cutting-edge climate data, environmental hazard modeling, and structural engineering tools to develop risk-consistent design criteria for future infrastructure resilience. Reasonable duties will include documenting research processes, preparing manuscripts, assisting in reporting to funding agencies, and contributing to proposal development and broader impacts, such as data sharing and community engagement. Other reasonable duties may be assigned as needed. This is a full-time, one-year position.
Salary: $42,500.00
Job Requirements:
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
+ Ph.D. in Civil/Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Atmospheric Science, Climate Science, or a related field by the start date.
+ Proficiency in Python programming and working with large datasets.
+ Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and collaborate on interdisciplinary teams.
+ Experience in environmental load modeling, climate data analysis, or extreme value statistics.
+ Candidates must address their ability to work with culturally diverse populations.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
+ Familiarity with ASCE 7 or other structural design standards.
+ Experience with regional climate models (e.g., NA-CORDEX) or reanalysis data (e.g., NARR).
+ Understanding of freezing precipitation physics or atmospheric icing processes.
+ Experience in preparing publications and presenting at scientific or professional meetings.
