Summary The position is located in the Office of Protection Services' Security Command Center (SCC), a multi-function uninterrupted central system monitoring, reporting and dispatch facility consisting of a highly sophisticated computer-based Integrated Security Management System (ISMS)), Administrator’s Staff (A), of the National Gallery of Art. Responsibilities In this position, you will: Ensure safety, security and appropriate environmental conditions for National Gallery visitors, staff and collections through consistent monitoring and response to systems, maintaining situational awareness across all National Gallery facilities, grounds and access points. Provide clear, accurate and appropriate oral communication via established protocols to ensure coworkers, supervisors, staff and visitors are informed, directed properly, and kept safe. Initiate communication to ensure that all personnel staffing the SCC are aware of all alarms or unusual readings on systems and provides interpretation of complex readings. Make routine reports consistent with time, content and overall compliance with SCC and National Gallery policy. Requirements Conditions of Employment You must be a United States Citizen. Suitable for Federal employment, determined by a background investigation May be required to successfully complete a probationary period Must be able to work on any shift. Conditions of Employment: Incumbents are required to maintain a firearms certification. This position is a drug testing designated position (TDP). This is an Emergency Employee – Critical Operations position, required to remain on duty or report to duty in the event of dismissals and closings during hazardous weather and other emergency situations. Must be able to work on an eight-hour day, evening or midnight shift. Requires weekend and holiday duty. Requires vision correctable to 20/20. Must be able to obtain and keep a driver's license. Incumbent has 90 days after date of hire to obtain a valid state Driver’s License. Must have verbal and manual dexterity skills sufficient to communicate using a two-way radio. The work is generally sedentary, but some walking, stooping, kneeling, and bending may be required to physically inspect both interior and exterior areas where physical security systems are located. The incumbent must be physically able to operate a computer keyboard. Ability to perform all essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. Successful completion of National Gallery Special Police Officer Training Course. No domestic violence convictions (per Domestic Violence Amendment of Gun Control Act of 1968 “Lautenberg Amendment of 1996”). Qualifications Basic Qualifications Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Experience such as work with a Federal, State, municipal, local, or private protective organization that involved the protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass; or maintaining order and protecting life. Such experience must have provided a knowledge of protective systems and techniques. Acceptable experience includes service in the Armed Services or Coast Guard that involved the performance of guard duties on a regular or intermittent basis. For Security Guard positions in a hospital setting, experience as a psychiatric nursing assistant or a similar position safeguarding patients is qualifying. Investigation of Fitness A character investigation may be conducted on applicants selected for employment. The purpose of such an investigation is to secure evidence of the candidate's honesty, integrity, general character, and loyalty to the U.S. Government. Such investigations will be conducted under the security requirements of the hiring agency. Medical Requirements The duties of these positions require moderate to arduous physical exertion and/or duties of a hazardous nature. The following medical requirements apply to all applicants: good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear the conversational voice. Specialized Experience For this position, specialized experience is at least one year of experience, equivalent in responsibility to the GS-05 level in the Federal service, providing security guard services. Those applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be evaluated against these factors to determine the best-qualified candidates. Security – Knowledge of security protocols and responsibilities. Communication – Skill in oral and written communication to provide and coordinate information. You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume serves as the basis for qualification determinations and must highlight your most relevant and significant work experience and education (if applicable) as it relates to this job opportunity. Your resume must include the dates of all qualifying experience (from month/year to month/year) and the number of hours worked/volunteered per week. The incumbents will undergo an initial 90-day training period under the guidance/supervision of a Supervisory SCC Operator. At the conclusion of the 90-day period, the Apprentices will be evaluated, and a determination will be made to continue with the training evaluation period or return the Apprentice to their previous position.
