Job Description
The Director of the Externships Program oversees all aspects of the Law School’s Externship Program, a crucial component of the experiential learning offerings.
The Director of Externship Programs coordinates three interconnected components of the program: (1) Advising law students seeking externships (domestic & international) and overseeing their supervision once placed; (2) Working with fi eld placement and fi eld placement supervisors to coordinate the placement and ensure compliance with BCLS externship policies; and (3) Managing and advising adjunct faculty who teach externship seminars. In each area, the Program Director ensures that the Externship Program remains in compliance with the ABA Accreditation Standards. Each role is crucial to the education of Boston College Law School Students, BCLS’s reputation in our community and with our alumni, and for our compliance with ABA standards. Each semester, an average of 55 students extern through this program, completing a total of approximately 350 credits between them.
This position works with students, faculty, alumni, and staff and supervisors at field placements. The position oversees approximately 10 faculty each academic year (both doctrinal and adjunct) and makes recommendations to the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for the hiring of adjuncts in the Externship Program.
Essential functions include:
+ Develop and maintain relationships with public and private sector employers as well as members of the judiciary. Recruit, approve, and support externship placements for students throughout the year including placements in the BC/Dublin and BC in DC Program.
+ Provide Academic Advising to students regarding externships. Monitor and supervise students throughout the externship experience.
+ Develop, processes, and execute program administration for a successful Externship Program that is in compliance with ABA Accreditation Standards. Collect, maintain, compile and analyze data regarding externships.
+ Manage platform for tracking data related to placements and student advising notes.
+ Create and update program guides, resources, marketing materials, website content, etc. for the successful promotion and execution of the program.
+ Assist in recruiting faculty to teach in externship seminars. and assist faculty in developing course syllabi for their courses.
+ Maintain relationships with the offices where externs are placed and with the field placement supervisors at those locations.
+ Evaluate and monitor the quality of the experience and the supervision, including intervening where problems arise and reviewing written evaluations at the conclusion of each placement.
Full-Time Equivalent Hiring Range: $83,950 to $104,950; salary commensurate with relevant experience.
Requirements
Required:
+ JD from accredited law school
+ Excellent writing and editing abilities, comfort with public speaking, and affinity for working with different constituents, including counseling and mentoring students
+ Experience managing and developing a legal program
+ Minimum of five years of experience in career placement, externships/internships, and/or experiential learning
Externship seminars meet in the evenings. This position will require occasional, though not consistent appearances at the seminars. This position requires occasional travel to field placements to accomplish the recruitment and oversight goals stated above.
