    Job Summary

    We are seeking someone to lead our emergency dispatch team in our Emergency Communications Center. You should have experience in emergency communications and a passion for public safety and ensuring the safety and well-being of our community through services provided by the University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security.

     

    You report to an Associate Director. You will direct, train, and manage the performance of dispatch personnel within a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP). You will ensure the efficient operation of the Emergency Communications Center while maintaining a high standard of service and compliance with all policies and regulations.

    The Division of Public Safety and Security (http://dpss.umich.edu/) leads all public safety functions within the university, including police, security, and emergency management, and offers an integrated approach to safety and security, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. DPSS combines Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint operations to provide students, visitors, faculty, and staff with a safe and secure environment. Through our partnerships across the university and local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, we use a blended service model to meet the needs of our community.

    Responsibilities*

    + **Team Leadership & Development:** Manage communications officer, providing mentoring, guidance, training, and promoting a positive work environment that encourages professional growth.

    + **Operational Oversight:** Ensure smooth operation of the dispatch center, including call handling, resource allocation, and compliance with protocols and regulations.

    + **Quality Assurance & Crisis Management:** Monitor call and dispatch quality, address operational issues, and provide leadership during critical incidents.

    + **Collaboration & Communication:** Work with law enforcement, fire departments, and other emergency agencies to ensure clear communication and coordination.

    + **Policy & Data Management:** Develop policies, analyze performance metrics, and use data to improve dispatch efficiency and service delivery.

    Required Qualifications*

    + A bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary.

    + 3+ years of experience as a dispatcher or communications officer is required.

    + You must pass the supervisor training program inclusive of dispatch responsibilities.

    + Flexibility to work different shifts and hours to manage a 24/7 communication operation including nights, weekends, and holidays.

    + Experience promoting a positive work environment and promoting professional development among staff in high-stress settings.

    + Experience managing and leading operational processes, including resource management, call handling, and ensuring compliance with established protocols and regulatory standards.

    + Hands-on experience developing training programs designed to enhance the skills of staff, with a focus on emergency communication best practices.

    + Background in quality assurance and process improvement with experience monitoring performance, identifying areas for improvement, and implementing strategies to enhance call handling and dispatch processes.

    Additional Information

     

    All members of the DPSS team are considered Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) under The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. As such, you are required to report anyClery reportable offenses (https://www.clerycenter.org/) that come to your attention. DPSS employees must also complete the Clery Compliance training within 14 days of employment and annually thereafter.

     

    Union Affiliation

     

    This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Command Officers Association of Michigan, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
