POSITION SUMMARY
The AvantGarde (AG) Alternative Dispute Resolution Specialist – supports the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) by acting as a neutral facilitator guiding parties in a dispute towards a mutually agreeable resolution without taking sides or imposing a decision. Work is part-time and ad hoc with assignments based on the variable needs of the agency.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Mediation and Conflict Resolution
o Serves as a certified mediator to facilitate resolution of disputes involving workplace conflict, discrimination complaints (EEO), personnel actions, and labor-management issues.
o Applies a variety of ADR techniques including mediation, facilitation, conciliation, and interest-based problem solving.
o Manages mediation sessions to promote voluntary, confidential, and interest-based discussions that result in mutually acceptable agreements.
Advisory and Consultation
o Serves as an expert advisor on ADR-related matters, offering guidance to agency leadership and stakeholders on dispute prevention and resolution strategies.
o Collaborates with legal counsel, EEO officials, labor relations specialists, and human resources to identify appropriate ADR interventions.
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
• Federal certification or equivalent credential as a mediator, with significant experience conducting formal mediation sessions within the Federal sector, including EEO and HR-related disputes.
• Comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of Employment Dispute Resolution, fair employment practices, employment law, and other employment policies Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and guidance (e.g., ADR Act of 1996, Title VII, EEOC Management Directive 110).
• Ability to analyze and quickly synthesize complex information, refining and narrowing issues through settlement discussions.
• Skill in collaborative problem solving and consensus building.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and facilitation skills, with the ability to remain neutral and manage emotionally charged conversations.
• Significant experience successfully engaging in virtual mediation sessions using current collaboration tools such as MS Teams or Zoom.
Supervisory Controls:
Reports to the AG Program Manager. Works independently, exercising sound judgment and discretion. Receives general supervision with assignments given in terms of broad objectives.
Work Environment:
Work is part-time (ad hoc) and assignments are based on the need of the agency. Work is performed in an office setting, with occasional travel for in-person mediation or training sessions. Hybrid/remote options may be available, depending on agency policy.
