    BIOLOGIST SUPERVISOR/ ROCKEFELLER REFUGE

    LDWF is seeking to hire a Biologist Supervisor responsible for exercising supervision and coordination of habitat management projects and other activities at Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge. The refuge consists of 70,000 acres and is one of the most important waterfowl wintering areas in the United States. The Refuge functions as a national laboratory for research on marsh management, plant ecology, fisheries, and wildlife.

    Minimum Qualifications

    A bachelor’s degree in a biological science, marine science, environmental science, wildlife or fisheries, animal science, forestry, or natural resources plus four years of experience in wildlife or fisheries, forestry, or environmental science; OR

    A non-thesis master's degree in a biological science, marine science, environmental science, wildlife or fisheries, animal science, forestry, or natural resources plus three years of the required specialized experience; OR

    A master's degree with a completed thesis or a doctorate in a biological science, marine science, environmental science, wildlife or fisheries, animal science, forestry, or natural resources plus two years of the required specialized experience.

    Job Duties and Other Information

    JOB DUTIES

    This is a supervisor position, directly involved in field and office activities. The position is responsible for exercising supervision and coordination of habitat management projects at LDWF's, Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge.

    Duties include:

    + Monitoring and/or supervision of wetland restoration, oil and gas mitigation, dredging activity, seismic activity, as well as waterfowl surveys, shorebird surveys, vegetative surveys, completion of coastal use permitting applications, and fisheries monitoring.

    + The incumbent is responsible for assisting the Biologist Program Manager with research, management, and outreach programs on the Refuge and within surrounding communities.

    + Coordinates habitat management activities on the refuge including prescribed burning, herbicide treatments, and water level and salinity management.

    + Develops formal management plans and prescribed bum plans; and submits plans to the proper regulatory authorities to acquire permissions for regulated activities. Works with other agencies in developing regional wetland/habitat restoration plans.

    + Supervises and coordinates activities of lower-level personnel. Coordinates scheduling and use of refuge facilities.

    + Supervises maintenance of refuge facilities. Ensures that all USACE/Coastal Use Permits are up to date for work at Rockefeller Refuge; develops and submits new permits for proposed work and submits project-monitoring reports to regulatory agencies.

    + Assists Biologist Program Manager with coordination and implementation of the Rockefeller Mineral Management Program.

    + Designs, implements, and directs habitat related research programs on Rockefeller Refuge.

    + Coordinates with the Rockefeller Research Program on other aspects of research conducted at Rockefeller Refuge.

    + Provides technical advice to coastal property owners on wetland habitat management.

    + Coordinates with the statewide waterfowl project in conducting waterfowl specific surveys and banding projects.

    + Implements and coordinates other wildlife surveys as need on Rockefeller Refuge.

    + Develop specification and prepare procurement documents for purchasing of vehicles, equipment and other materials needed for management of the refuge.

    + Assist Biologist Program Manager in preparation of annual budget, annual reports and Capital Outlay projects. Assist Biologist Program Manager with CWPPRA specific project development and tracking of proposed CWPPRA projects on Rockefeller and SWLA.

    + Represents LDWF on region and national working groups and research endeavors as need by the agency.

    + Coordinates with other refuge staff in public education and outreach programs that enhance the mission of the refuge.

    POSITION -SPECIFIC DETAILS:

    This position will be domiciled in Cameron Parish.

     

    Appointment Type:Job appointment, Probational appointment, Promotional, or Detail to special duty.

     

    If filled as a job appointment, there is a possibility that this position may be converted to a probational appointment should funding become available. Current permanent status classified state employees may be required to accept a probational appointment if selected.
