    Job Description

    This position is the Michigan State Police (MSP) statewide Polygraph Program Intern Specialist responsible for researching, developing, coordinating and instructing the Polygraph Section’s Michigan State Police Polygraph Program (MSPPP) American Polygraph Association (APA) accredited basic school and section intern program. As the polygraph program Intern specialist, the predominant responsibility is to ensure examiner interns become proficient and meet legal standards within the practice to become licensed set forth by the department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA). The Polygraph Section is comprised of Detective Sergeants who begin the program as examiner interns seeking to acquire Public Examiner licensing. The examiner intern phase requires up to thirty-six months which includes an accredited basic school and exam evaluation period. A MSPPP basic school is conducted annually with one-week advanced schools held intermittently through the year. The intern examiner is required to complete the basic school and the intern examiner program in 36 months to obtain Public Examiners license.

     

    The statewide Polygraph Program Intern Specialist must have expert knowledge of evaluating polygraph chart data, format use and proper application, examination processes, and other credibility assessment data. As the Program Intern Specialist, this expertise will prepare an intern examiner to perform a valid and reliable polygraph examination to meet industry standards. The incumbent will instruct on the evaluation of properly formulated credibility assessment methods and proctor diagnostic specific issue examinations for examiner interns. The incumbent will train intern examiners on all aspects of psychophysiological detection of deception, evaluations of case investigations of varied complexity and provides both training and testimony as required in state, federal, and tribal courts. This position will instruct in the Michigan State Police Polygraph Program (MSPPP) basic school and meet instructor requirements set by the American Polygraph Association (APA) accreditation standards. The program intern specialist will develop, prepare and organize all MSPPP training materials per APA accreditation standards and formulate new methodologies associated with the trade. These tasks affect all services provided by the Polygraph Section and are utilized by enlisted members and other law enforcement agencies. This position functions in a bias-free manner.
