    Summary These positions are located within the Health Administration Service (HAS), at the VA Medical Center in Salt Lake City, UT. The Transportation Assistant processes mileage travel claims, ambulance travel claims, and assists travel arrangements for Veterans through in house drivers or third party vendors. Responsibilities ***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed below represent the full performance level of GS-06. At the GS-05 grade level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-06. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds. Duties include, but are not limited to the following: Schedule and coordinate with all vendors for Special Mode Transportation daily while insuring both patient and vendor are aware of times/dates to facilitate their care. Perform customer care in accordance with VA policy and ICARE program. Prepare documentation to schedule and reserve tickets for eligible patients requiring airline transportation. Provide transportation at Government expense to beneficiaries and their attendants traveling to and from VA facilities and other places for the purpose of examination, treatment, or care. Determine eligibility for the program, and process requests. Review eligibility of each Veteran before finalizing Beneficiary Travel reimbursements to determine accuracy of claim and provide accurate reimbursement of claim. Attend to all details of voucher processing to prevent the processing of fraudulent claims and is responsible of reporting potential fraudulent claims to appropriate authorities. Perform in depth research of payments for reimbursement when requested. Extract and prepare data processing reports for daily batch(S) review by various members of management and/or Leadership. Process payment of ambulance claims by entering multiple software packages. Evaluate all aspects of fraud research and prevention in accordance with VA National and local Policy Maintain, correct, and audit system balances for multiple patient accounts daily basis. Prepare all documentation to ensure balances of discharged and deceased patients are returned appropriately to the Veteran, Next of Kin, or Estates. Performs other related duties as assigned Work Schedule: Monday-Friday; 8:00am-4:30pm; or similar shift arranged with the manager. Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP) Qualifications TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION AT THE GS-05 LEVEL YOU MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Have at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-04) in Federal Service that has equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of a Transportation Assistant, GS-05. Specialized experience includes: processing request for reimbursement; maintaining fund control points; coordinating work operation; determining eligible for programs and/or services; reviewing requests; ensuring compliance with regulations; applying knowledge of various types of transportation options and routes available to customers; maintaining records; and providing professional customer service to customers. NOTE: Your experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. -OR- EDUCATION: Have successfully completed four (4) years above high school in any field which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. This education must have been obtained at an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university NOTE: Transcripts must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. -OR- COMBINATION: Have an equivalent combination of successfully completed post-high school education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total qualification requirements for this grade level. This education must have been obtained at an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION AT THE GS-06 LEVEL YOU MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Have at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-5) in the Federal Service that has equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of a Transportation Assistant at the GS-6 level. Qualifying specialized experience includes: balancing, reconciling, and adjusting invoices; arranging modes of transportation for individuals; reviewing travel authorizations and vouchers; preparing correspondence concerning travel eligibility; applying knowledge of various types of transportation options and routes available to customers; and providing professional customer service to customers. NOTE: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. No special physical demands are required. Incumbent will be exposed to stressful working situations that require a professional attitude and collective reasoning.
