    Job Description Summary

    The Program Assistant, under general supervision, works mainly in an office environment but responsibilities include working within BSL2 laboratories. The Quality Assurance and Environment Health and Safety Department is responsible for the oversight, compliance, and implementation of laboratory accreditations (i.e., AAVLD, ISO17025), regulatory certification requirements (i.e., NAHLN, USDA), and laboratory safety programs.

     

    Duties and Responsibilities

     

    The Program Assistant for QA and EHS assists the agency Quality Managers and Laboratory Safety Officer with daily departmental operations and implementation of the Quality Management System and laboratory safety programs.

     

    + Assists with management of hazardous waste collection and disposal.

    + Performs routine safety equipment checks (weekly eye washes, monthly AEDs).

    + Assists with management of chemical inventories.

    + Is responsible for collecting and organizing new employee training records and vaccination status.

    + Liaises between the Safety Officer and TAMU EHS for routine safety equipment (fire extinguishers, safety showers, BSCs, AEDs, etc.).

    + Assists with and performs internal laboratory safety inspections.

    + Assists in tracking select agent cases and maintaining regulatory paperwork.

    + Maintains Quality Assurance Section’s supply of equipment.

    + Meets and escorts outside vendors providing equipment maintenance.

    + Meets and escorts lab coat vendor and other safety related visitors.

    + Maintains lab coat inventory.

    + Assists in calibrating laboratory critical equipment.

    + Is responsible for incinerator waste pick up at TVMDL’s locations in Center and Gonzales.

    + Is responsible for reviewing, assigning, and compliance with EHS trainings for staff, as needed.

    + Edits and updates quality documents and SOPs for the laboratory.

    + Assists on projects assigned to Quality Assurance or EHS.

    + Assists Quality Managers and Laboratory Safety Officer with other tasks, as necessary.

    Additional Position Details:

    + This position is required to work onsite during normal business hours M-F 8 am to 5 pm.

    + TVMDL is located on the campus of Texas A&M University (TAMU). Parking permits are available from TAMU at the expense of the employee.

    + Incumbent will be required to take a pre-exposure rabies vaccination series; TVMDL will cover all costs.

    + TVMDL is considered an essential component of the Texas A&M University System (TAMUS) and remains operational for several “open holidays” in which overtime or compensatory time may be earned. For information on TVMDL’s holiday schedule, visit our website.

    + This is a security-sensitive position. The individual in this position is required to handle Protected Health Information (PHI) as defined by HIPAA regulations. The individual is required to handle PHI in accordance with A&M System policy and is further required to complete HIPAA training as a condition of employment, within a reasonable timeframe after the individual’s employment, and on as as- needed basis thereafter.

    + Occasional in-state travel is required. Operates assigned equipment in a safe manner and in adherence to all TAMUS, AgriLife, and TVMDL policies as well as local, state, and federal laws.

    Qualifications

    Required Education and Experience:

    + Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

    + Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.

    + Verbal and written communication skills.

    + A bility to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

    Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations

    + Must have a valid Texas motor vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Bachelor's degree in a related science field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    + Experience working in a science laboratory or familiar with laboratory operations.

    + Experience working in an accredited laboratory or familiarity with a Quality Management System.

    + Familiar with safety programs including lab safety, biological safety, and chemical safety.

    + Previous experience performing lab safety inspections.

    + Proficient with Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Teams).

    + Ability to lift 50 pounds and stand for extended periods of time.

    + Clean driving record.

    + Self-starter who can work independently.

    + Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
