Job Description
As an Outside Machinist specializing in diesel engines, you will be responsible for disassembling machinery or equipment to remove parts and make necessary repairs. Utilizing operating manuals, you will inspect, diagnose, and repair components of a ship's engine. Your role will involve monitoring and adjusting engine equipment, valves, gauges, tachometers, and other related machinery. You will examine parts for defects, such as breakage or excessive wear, and reassemble equipment after completing inspections, testing, or repairs.
Responsibilities
+ Disassemble machinery or equipment to remove parts and make repairs.
+ Use operating manuals to inspect, diagnose, and repair ship engine components.
+ Monitor and adjust engine equipment, valves, gauges, and tachometers.
+ Examine parts for defects, such as breakage or excessive wear.
+ Reassemble equipment after inspections, testing, or repairs.
+ Repair or maintain the operating condition of industrial production or processing machinery.
+ Repair or replace broken or malfunctioning components of machinery or equipment.
+ Clean, lubricate, or adjust parts, equipment, or machinery.
+ Operate newly repaired machinery or equipment to verify the adequacy of repairs.
+ Cut and weld metal to repair broken metal parts, fabricate new parts, or assemble new equipment.
+ Study blueprints or manufacturers' manuals to determine correct installation or operation of machinery.
+ Record parts/materials used, log repairs, and any maintenance done.
Essential Skills
+ Proficiency in working with valves, ship repair, pumps, engines, diesel repair, installation, troubleshooting shafts and pistons.
+ Experience in reading blueprints and using precision instruments such as calipers and micrometers.
+ Ability to determine causes of engine malfunction and decide on repair versus replacement.
+ Skill in installing dial indicators and performing alignment checks.
+ Competency in troubleshooting 4-Stroke Diesel Engines and cooling systems.
+ Ability to use precision instruments including feeler gauges, inside and outside micrometers, torque wrench, and dial indicator.
+ Strong math skills for converting measurements (millimeters to inches, centimeters to inches, meters to inches).
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ High School Diploma or GED.
+ Minimum 5 years of recent experience required; strong candidates with 3 years of experience may be considered.
+ Rapid Gate preferred for local candidates and required for Per Diem candidates.
Work Environment
The role is based in a shipyard/outdoor environment, supporting work at locations including Nassco, BAE, MHI, and Norfolk Naval. The position primarily operates on the 1st shift (7 AM - 3:30 PM) and when needed, the 2nd shift (3 PM - 11 PM). Availability to work weekends, usually Saturdays, and additional hours before and after shifts is required. The average workweek consists of 40-55 hours, dependent on workload.

This is a Contract position based out of Norfolk, Virginia.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $22.00/hr.
