Job Summary
We are looking for a Breeding Production Assistant II to join our Insourcing Solutions Team in Baltimore, MD.
* Monitor welfare of animals. Observe for health issues or abnormalities and report ASAP. Keep communication open regarding the status of animals in breeding rooms, ordered, or in quarantine. Understand anatomical and physiological differences of lab animals, and recognize changes or abnormalities in eating habits, feces, urine and behavior.
* Check for pups daily. Perform weaning at appropriate age and sex animals. Create and print cage cards with information regarding weaning, genotype, strain or lineage, sex and maturity of mice and rats. Update cage cards as necessary.
* Maintain breeding records and document appropriate information on cage cards and in the FileMaker (FM) database. Keep count of animals weaned in log book and enter in FM. Perform the breeder census weekly and forward to the appropriate recipients.
* Transfer animals when appropriate. Create transfer records and cage cards, and physically transfer the animals from the breeding rooms to the experimental rooms.
* Set up breeders: create breeder cards, physically set up the breeder pairs and harems. Refresh old breeders when necessary or requested. Rotate harem pairs.
* Perform microisolator cage change and housing. Collect tissues for molecular characterization. Notify investigators when samples are ready for genotyping. Double check genotyping results.
* File pertinent info regarding lines and animals in the breeding rooms and file them in binders organized by fiscal year.
* Perform end of the day final checks in Triad and the BRC. Send daily health reports when requested. Monitor environmental parameters, and report problems to the building maintenance department and lead/supervisor.
* Redirect PTs to the proper point of contract when an incorrect request is submitted. Alert lab when they are over their protocol limit. Notify the Technical Director (TD) when the supplies, space, or WT animals are getting low and need to be ordered or found.
* Assist and discuss with the TD the breeding plans, general or specific. Fill out and submit genotyping submission forms. Assist in meetings with PIs when needed. Assist with special projects requested by the investigator (PI) or the TD.
* Notify PIs and/or TD of changes to colonies, as well as when a problem specific to an animal or a line occurs.
* Assist in the training of personnel regarding proper animal handling procedures, technical tasks and the specificities of the breeding colony. Keep training records updated.
Job Qualifications
The following are the minimum job qualifications for the BPA II position:
* HSD or GED required. Associate of Science Degree in Genetics/ Animal Science or related field preferred.
* ALAT or LAT at hire preferred. ALAT within one year of employment required.
* A minimum of 2 - 3 years' experience in a transgenic laboratory animal facility required. 3 or more preferred.
The pay for this position is $27/hour USD per hour. Please note that salaries vary within the range based on factors including, but not limited to skills, certifications and locations.
