BIOLOGIST SUPERVISOR/ SOUTHCENTRAL COASTAL WMA’S (COASTAL LAFAYETTE REGION)
This position is a Wildlife and Fisheries Biologist Supervisor domiciled at the Lafayette office and receives direct supervision from a Biologist Manager. This position exercises broad stewardship responsibilities over Atchafalaya Delta WMA and State Wildlife, Marsh Island and Isle Dernieres Barriers Islands Refuges. These WMAs/refuges are located in St. Mary, Vermilion, Iberia and Terrebonne Parishes and consists of habitats ranging from active delta to barrier island habitats. The selected candidate may direct the work of lower level biologists, maintenance personnel and/or wildlife and fisheries technicians that are assigned to these coastal WMAs/refuges. This position is responsible for assisting and advising supervisors in planning, coordinating, and conducting management, research, and restoration on coastal WMAs/refuges. The incumbent is required to use computers to write reports and submit collected data. The incumbent may also provide technical assistance to private landowners.
The job duties of this position require the incumbent to exert brief periods of heavy muscular or strenuous physical exertion. Some job activities require extended work hours and weekend work. Job activities also require the incumbent to be capable of riding in helicopters and/or fixed wing aircraft as well as all types of vessels. The incumbent may also be required to participate in aerial waterfowl surveys. Additionally, the incumbent will be required, as needed, to respond to nuisance or injured wildlife calls, which often require after hours and weekend work. Overnight travel for multiple days at remote areas and throughout Louisiana will be required. Working in the field, out of boats, at night and in inclement weather will also be required.
Minimum Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in a biological science, marine science, environmental science, wildlife or fisheries, animal science, forestry, or natural resources plus four years of experience in wildlife or fisheries, forestry, or environmental science; OR
A non-thesis master's degree in a biological science, marine science, environmental science, wildlife or fisheries, animal science, forestry, or natural resources plus three years of the required specialized experience; OR
A master's degree with a completed thesis or a doctorate in a biological science, marine science, environmental science, wildlife or fisheries, animal science, forestry, or natural resources plus two years of the required specialized experience.

Job Duties and Other Information
JOB DUTIES
Duties may include some or all of the following:
+ Serves as field supervisor to oversee the overall management of several south-central Louisiana WMAs and Refuges. Develop, implement and monitor management, research, restoration, and/or enhancement projects on several coastal WMAs and Refuges. Management activities include but are not limited to the following:
1. Collection and assessment of habitat, environmental and biological data (water level and salinity, vegetative and wildlife surveys, hunter bag checks, managed hunts, trapping/banding projects, etc.) Advises supervisory staff on suggested regulation changes and monitors special use permit activities.
2. Develops and implements various land stewardship and habitat management practices on coastal WMAs/refuges. This includes, but is not limited to water level and salinity management via the operation/maintenance of water control structures, levees systems and pumps as well as vegetation management to promote desirable vegetation (controlling noxious vegetation, burning, plantings, etc. It may also include wildlife food plots and the control of nuisance animals.
3. Provide technical advice to supervisory staff regarding formulation/implementation of programs, projects, permits, and policies for resources on coastal properties including alligators, fur bearers, fisheries, non-game resources, and r/t/e species.
4. Recommends and implements (when approved) species related management, projects, activities, changes, etc. (harvests, nuisance animal removal, quotas/bag limits, seasons, locations, etc.) for coastal WMAs/refuges. Also oversees managed hunt activities.
5. Advises and provides supervisory staff with recommendations and when directed implements projects, activities, etc.. related to land and habitat restoration and enhancement on coastal WMAs/refuges.
+ Oversees the daily operation of WMA/Refuge activities such as maintenance, repair and construction projects. This may involve water control structures, trails, roads, parking areas, campsites, facilities, workshops, storage buildings, water vessels, lawnmowers, tractors, UTVs, engines, etc. and include tasks such as mowing, grading, ditching, cleaning, etc.
+ Works with other programs within the Department to provide assistance with that programs’ research/project needs including but not limited to the deer, waterfowl, alligator, wildlife diversity, and upland game programs. Additionally, will provide assistance as needed to University research personnel, other government agencies and NGOs for any related needs on the WMAs/Refuges.
+ Conducts performance planning and review meetings with, and annual evaluations of subordinate staff members, coordinates the filling of vacancies, approves time and attendance reports and approves leave. Assists in developing the annual budget, and reviews and recommends purchases. Reviews and concurs on vehicle logs, equipment inventory, expense accounts and other required personnel forms and reports. Provides supervisory and logistical support to staff.
+ Assists the mineral program in reviewing potential oil and gas activities on the coastal WMAs/Refuges. Activities may include new/existing well locations, seismic projects, restoration actions for impacts to the WM As or Refuges.
+ Other duties as assigned

This position will be domiciled in Lafayette Parish.
Appointment Type:Job appointment, probational appointment, promotional, or detail to special duty.
If filled as a job appointment, there is a possibility that this position may be converted to a probational appointment should funding become available. Current permanent status classified state employees may be required to accept a probational appointment if selected.
